BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 28, 2017) – The Webber International University men's basketball team led by three with 1:17 left to play, but the Warriors could not hold on as they fell to Florida College, 70-65, in a tightly contested nonconference game on Monday night inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
Senior
Osandai Vaughn had a terrific game for the Warriors, finishing with a new-season high for Webber with 27 points while adding 10 rebounds for the second double-double of his senior campaign.
Vaughn's two free throws with two minutes left tied the contest at 62-62, and then Webber went ahead 65-62 after a 3-pointer by
Nikita Orap on an assist from
Joseph Serrano.
From there, Florida College's Kent Heagarty connected on two of three free throw attempts to make it a one-point game with 1:02 left, and then after a Webber turnover, Heagarty scored on a layup to mark the game's final lead change and put the Falcons ahead by one at 66-65 with 37 seconds left.
After a missed free throw by Webber on the front end of a one-and-one, Florida College took a three-point lead after two more free throws before Vaughn missed on a long 3-pointer that could have tied it.
Webber's record fell to 3-3 overall on the season while Florida College's rose to 7-2 after back-to-back wins over two Sun Conference schools (defeated No. 25 Warner University on Nov. 21).
Behind Vaughn, fellow-senior
Johnathan Childs was next in scoring with 11 points while adding seven rebounds, and freshman
Tommie Luke matched his career-high with 10 points on two highlight-reel dunks. Childs has reached double-digit scoring in all six regular-season games so far for Webber.
Rasheem Etienne added two 3-pointers and finished with eight points and four assists while Serrano also added four assists, and Orap finished with eight rebounds for a new career-high on the boards.
Webber trailed by as many as nine points during the first half on Monday before battling back to a 30-30 tie at halftime. From there, the Warriors trailed by seven only two minutes into the final 20-minute frame before responding to lead by seven themselves after a dunk by Luke with 7:43 remaining.
The Warriors will take the court two more times this week as they travel to Fort Myers, Florida, to battle NCAA Division-I Florida Gulf Coast University in exhibition action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 29, and then Webber returns to Sun Conference action on Saturday, December 2, at No. 25 Warner University.
