JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (November 25, 2017) – Led by a game-high 13 points from
Montrese Weller, the Webber International University women's basketball team fell to tournament host Jacksonville University, 64-43, during day two of the 2017 Fairfield Inn Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday at Swisher Gymnasium.
Similar to their first game of the tournament against the University of North Florida, the Warriors once again won the third quarter after getting off to a very slow start in the first quarter. Webber outscored the Ospreys 22-12 in the third quarter on Friday after being held to six points in the first quarter. On Saturday against the Dolphins, Webber outscored Jacksonville 18-10 in the third but was well behind on the scoreboard after falling behind 22-5 after the opening 10 minutes.
Webber finished off the third quarter on a 9-0 run to pull within 14 points of the Dolphins at 47-33 as Weller connected on a three with only 13 seconds left in the period. However, Jacksonville took advantage of a slow start to the fourth quarter for the Warriors, using a 12-2 run over the first six minutes of the frame to take a 24-point lead and put the game away. Webber was 0-for-8 from the field with four turnovers during the Dolphins' run in the fourth quarter.
Weller finished with three 3-pointers en route to finishing with 13 points to lead both teams, and she also added six rebounds. Including Friday's and Saturday's exhibition games, Weller has now connected on two or more 3-pointers in a game four times this season.
Also for Webber,
Ashley Perry finished with nine points and four boards,
RayGene Garner had seven points and seven rebounds,
Shayla McPhearson had six points, and
Abby Unis had six points, five rebounds and two blocks while
Breyonna Reed added four assists.
It was a second straight exhibition game for Webber (2-4) on back-to-back nights while Jacksonville's record improve to 4-2 overall on the young season.
Next up, Webber will return to regular-season action with a Sun Conference matchup against Ave Maria University at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 28, in Babson Park, Florida, and the Sabbagh Athletic Center. After that, the Warriors will embark on a four-game road swing featuring two TSC games and one final exhibition opponent.
