Women’s basketball drops exhibition contest to North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (November 24, 2017) – The Webber International University women's basketball team helped kick off the 2017 Fairfield Inn Thanksgiving Tournament, hosted by Jacksonville University, by squaring off against the University of North Florida in exhibition action. The Warriors fell to the Ospreys by a score of 81-53 on Friday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium.

Webber, whose record remained at 2-4 overall after the exhibition game, outscored North Florida (3-2) by 10, 22-12, in the third quarter, but was hampered by a slow start where the Warriors were outscored by 10 themselves, 16-6, in the opening quarter.

After the big third quarter that saw the Warriors score each of the final six points of the period to pull within 11 points of the Ospreys at 55-44, Webber made it a 10-point game at 57-47 one minute into the fourth quarter after a 3-pointer by Montrese Weller. From there, North Florida went on a 11-1 run, including five trips to the free throw line, to take back control with a 20-point margin, 68-48, with 6:19 to play.

Ashley Perry led the Warriors in scoring with 14 points and was once again very strong from the free throw line, connecting on 8-of-9 attempts. Including Friday's performance, Perry has now scored 14 or more points and made eight or more free throws in three of her last four games.

Breyonna Reed added eight free throws to finish with 10 points, Weller added two 3-pointers to also reach the 10-point mark, and Emmarrie Carmen finished with eight points on six made free throws. On the boards, Abby Unis led the way with eight rebounds while Perry added six.

"We did some good things today, and I really witnessed some improvement," said Head Coach Grady Morrell. "I feel confident we will peak at the right time."

The Ospreys finished the game with a program-record 35 made free throws on 42 attempts. North Florida's previous school record was 32 made free throws, which was set back in 1997.

Webber will have to prepare for a quick turnaround in the Fairfield Inn Thanksgiving Tournament as the Warriors return to action tomorrow, November 25, to face tournament-host Jacksonville in another exhibition game against an NCAA Division-I school. The Warriors and the Dolphins will tipoff at 2 p.m., and fans can catch the action on ESPN3.
