Women’s basketball comes away with 28 steals in win over Trinity College

BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 20, 2017) – The Webber International University women's basketball team set numerous individual career-highs as the Warriors defeated Trinity College (Fla.) 89-48 on Monday night at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Ashley Perry led both teams in scoring with 14 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the free throw line, and added a career-high nine steals, one shy of a double-double. Abby Unis scored a career-high 13 points and Shayla McPhearson matched her career-high in points with 12 while adding a career-high eight steals.

In addition to Perry and McPhearson, the Warriors worked together as a team all evening to keep their intensity and pressure up on defense as Webber (2-4) benefited from 40 Trinity turnovers and added 28 steals as a team. Webber finished with 46 points off of turnovers while Trinity had 20 points off of turnovers.

Eight Warriors earned a steal on Monday as Breyonna Reed and Paris Copeland each added three, which was a career-high for Copeland, and Emmarrie Carmen added two.

The Warriors also finished with 17 assists as a team from nine different players as Reed led the way with five.

Head Coach Grady Morrell said, "We did exactly what we are supposed to do, but our goal is to get better every game now. We have two exhibitions against NCAA Division-I teams coming up, so getting better is still a must."

Next in scoring for Webber was Copeland and Tiffany Zito with 10 points each, which was a career-high for Zito, followed by Carmen with eight points, RayGene Garner with seven and Julie Moreau with six. Moreau was also particularly impressive on the boards as she finished with 16 rebounds, a season-high for Webber so far, and added 10 offensive boards for a career-high in offensive rebounds, total rebounds and points. Carmen added nine rebounds for her career-high in the category.

Webber led by 14 (42-28) at halftime before holding Trinity to only six points in the third quarter to jump ahead by 38 points at 72-34.

Next up for Webber will be the Fairfield Inn Thanksgiving Tournament hosted by NCAA D-I Jacksonville University. The Warriors will face the University of North Florida at 12 p.m. on Friday, November 24, in a neutral-court game, and then will face the host team, Jacksonville, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 25, as both games will count as exhibitions for Webber. The game between the Warriors and the Dolphins on Saturday will be broadcasted live on ESPN3.
