Women’s volleyball gets back on track, takes down Lions on Senior Day

BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 4, 2017) – In a match filled with lots of emotion and a little bit of drama, the Webber International University women's volleyball team stayed together as it defeated Florida Memorial University 3-1 (25-23, 26-28, 25-18, 25-16) on Saturday during Senior Day at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

With what was the final regular-season match of 2017 for Webber, the Warriors will enter The Sun Conference Tournament as the No. 2 seed with an overall record of 23-5 and a conference mark of 14-2. The Warriors finished the regular season in second place in the conference standings, one match behind first-place Saint Thomas University (18-11, 15-1), while Florida Memorial (10-15, 6-10) finished in a three way-tie for fifth with Keiser University (9-21, 6-10) and Warner University (8-17, 6-10).

Playing for the final time on their home court, Michelle Calderon led the Warriors with 22 digs, Brianna Roque added four kills and matched a career-high with five blocks, Megan Dixon got the start and matched a career-high with seven digs, Kyleigh Stottlemyer also earned a start and finished with seven kills and three blocks, a career-high for both categories, and Kaxandra Naranjo started and tied her career-high in digs with five.

Head Coach Lindsey Martin said, "Today was a great win to honor our seniors with. I am proud that we could close out the regular season and their home careers on such a high note."

Webber trailed 20-18 in the opening set, using a 7-3 run to win it, but in the second set, a huge 22-13 Warrior advantage quickly evaporated as six straight points by the Lions capped a 12-2 run that put Florida Memorial ahead at 25-24. The six straight points by Florida Memorial came with the Lions facing set-point before each serve.

The Warriors, however, did not let the letdown in set two keep them from getting the job done as Webber put together nine straight points during the third set to take a 20-14 lead, and then used seven consecutive points in the fourth and final set to go ahead 15-7.

Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu had three kills during Webber's 9-0 run in the third set, and then she and Carlee Baxter finished with two kills apiece during the 7-0 run in the final frame.

Salanoa-Sagapolu would go on to finish the night leading both teams in kills with 16, with Brittany Taksas added 10 kills and five blocks and Emily Bowen finished with eight kills and a new career-high 15 digs.

Baxter dished out 41 assists, a new career-high for four-set matches, while Gilmary Ramos had 13 digs. Amber Lake added 10 digs in only two sets of action

The Warriors finished with attack percentages of .229 percent in the first set, .289 in the third and .217 in the fourth while holding Florida Memorial to .050 percent in the third set and -.022 percent in the last one.

Next up for Webber will be postseason as The Sun Conference Tournament is set to begin on Tuesday, November 7, with quarterfinal action. The Warriors, however, will receive one of two byes in the tournament, and therefore will not take the court again until Friday, November 10, for the semifinal round. The conference tournament championship match will take place on Saturday, November 11.
