LAKELAND, Fla. (November 16, 2017) –
Montrese Weller led the way for the Warriors with 16 points on four 3-pointers as the Webber International University women's basketball team hung with the fourth-ranked team in the country, Southeastern University, in the first half before falling to the Fire by a score of 92-53 on Thursday night.
It was the first Sun Conference game of the season for both teams as Webber (1-4 overall, 0-1 TSC) started the night with a four-point play by
RayGene Garner to jump ahead 4-2, and then led 6-4 after a bucket by
Paris Copeland three and a half minutes into the game.
Next, after a six straight points by Southeastern (6-0, 1-0), a basket by
Jakia Davis made it 10-8 as the Warriors only trailed by two, and then a three by Weller with less than three and a half minutes left in the opening period made it 14-11 in favor of the Fire.
After trailing 20-11 after one quarter, the Warriors found themselves down by 10 at 28-18 with 7:06 remaining in the first half as Webber was off to a slow start from the field, connecting on only five of its first 23 shot attempts.
The Warriors, however, were still within striking distance at halftime at 41-28 before being outscored 51-25 in the final 20 minutes. The Warriors finished the second quarter with a 40 percent shooting percentage from the field, and made eight free throws in the quarter.
Another bright spot for the Warriors was that they outscored the Fire 11-10 in second-chance points as Webber came down with 16 offensive rebounds to 13 for Southeastern. Four of Webber's offensive boards came from
Abby Unis while Copeland added three.
Garner would go on to finish with seven points for the Warriors while Davis added six. Unis finished with six points and seven rebounds, and Copeland had five points and six rebounds.
Next up, Webber returns to nonconference action inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center as the Warriors host Trinity College at 6 p.m. on Monday, November 20.
