Men’s basketball tames Tigers in season opener

BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 1, 2017) – The Webber International University men's basketball team got off to a great start in its 2017-18 campaign with an 87-69 win over Edward Waters College on Wednesday night at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

The win represented the first win as a collegiate head coach for newcomer Allen Corbin, who is looking to rebuild the culture for his team and establish a new style of play that will be exciting and enticing for fans to come watch.

"I am so proud of our guys' effort, focus and ability to translate what we practice to the game," said Corbin. "I was very excited to see the stands filled and I love the support from our Webber athletes. I hope we can build on this and work even harder to become better on and off the court."

Helping Corbin to change the culture and history of Webber basketball are a lot of new faces for Warrior fans this season, as well as a few familiar ones.

One of those new faces is Osandai Vaughn, who finished with 14 points on the evening and also added six rebounds to tie for the game-high in the category.

Returner Johnathan Childs led the Warriors with 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting and a 6-of-7 mark from the free throw line. Vaughn was also 4-of-6 from the free throw line, while newcomer Nikita Orap made all four of his free throw attempts and finished with 13 points.

Joseph Serrano had a strong all-around game with nine points, six assists and five rebounds, and Nicholas Blocker and McDonald Jean-Louis also each added nine points. Shaquille Williams added eights points, followed by Sheldon Durant with five to round out the scoring for Webber, and Garrett Woodmansee matched Vaughn's game-high rebounding total with six. Last but not least, Obi Romeo, a player with NCAA Division-I experience, earned the start and finished with a game-high two blocks.

Webber was benefited on Wednesday by outscoring Edward Waters 19-5 in points off of turnovers and 54-22 in bench points.

Webber's first double-digit lead of the night came on a 3-pointer by Vaughn with seven and a half minutes remaining in the opening half to make it 29-19 Warriors. Webber then closed the final five minutes of the half on a 12-4 run to turn a seven-point lead into a 46-31 halftime advantage.

Next up for Webber will be the University of the Virgin Islands on Tuesday, November 7, at 7 p.m. as the Warriors return to the Sabbagh Athletic Center. The Warriors will then travel to DeLand, Florida, on Friday November 10, to battle NCAA D-I Stetson University in an exhibition matchup, the first of six such matchups for Webber this season.
