BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 7, 2017) – The Webber International University men's basketball team saw two Warriors finish with a double-double and had four other players reach double-digits in scoring as the Warriors were victorious over the University of the Virgin Islands, 102-67, in front of a large home crowd on Tuesday night inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
All 13 Warriors in action entered the scoring column on Tuesday as Webber reached 100 points in a game for the first time since the 2010-11 season when the Warriors defeated Trinity College 102-93.
Leading Webber (2-0) in both scoring and rebounding was
Osandai Vaughn, who scored the first eight points of the game for the Warriors en route to 20 points on three 3-pointers while also grabbing a game-high 12 boards for the first double-double of his senior season.
Fellow-senior
Johnathan Childs finished with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, and added 11 rebounds to also secure the first double-double of his final campaign in a Webber uniform. He also finished with two blocks.
Nikita Orap finished with 12 points on four made 3-pointers, while
Garrett Woodmansee had 11 points on two 3-pointers as the Warriors finished with 11 three's on the evening.
Joseph Serrano added six points, five rebounds and five assists, and in their first action of the young season, junior
Andre Brooks added had 11 points, freshman
Tommie Luke had 10, and another freshman,
Rasheem Etienne, had seven.
"I am very happy with the effort of the entire team," said Head Coach
Allen Corbin. "The seniors stepped up in some big situations early and I thought overall our focus was there. We definitely have a lot of things to fix on the defensive end and we plan on watching film tonight and addressing that right away. Once again we had a good crowd and I know my guys are very appreciative of that."
As a team, the Warriors were strong from the free throw line at 73.5 percent (25-of-34), and also shot over 42 percent from the field while outscoring the Buccaneers 17-7 in points off turnovers as Virgin Islands (0-8) finished with 19 giveaways.
Webber never trailed in the game as the Warriors led 20-3 five and a half minutes in and never let the Buccaneers get closer than 13 the rest of the way. Vaughn opened the game with two 3-pointers in the first minute and 20 seconds of action.
Webber's largest lead of the game came with 10:34 remaining as a free throw by Brooks made it a 28-point margin at 76-48.
Next up for the Warriors will be an exhibition matchup at NCAA Division-I Stetson University on Friday, November 10, at 12 p.m. in DeLand, Florida. The game against the Hatters will be broadcasted on ESPN3. Webber will return to regular-season action the following day, Saturday, November 11, at Edward Waters College, a team the Warriors defeated by 18 in their season opener.
