BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 28, 2017) – The Webber International University women's soccer team took a defensive approach to playing the sixth-ranked team in the country, but the new strategy would not pay off in the end for the Warriors, who ultimately fell to No. 6 Keiser University by a score of 3-0 on Saturday at Warrior Field. In addition to being the Warriors' Senior Day, the match also represented the end of the regular season for Webber, which will now enter the postseason as the No. 4 seed in The Sun Conference Tournament.
Jessica Kearns,
Sarah McKinney,
Laura Borders,
Rachel Osborne,
Kara Quintanilla,
Juliana Furmankiewicz Fuentes,
Sydney Bailey and
Megan Flores were recognized prior to the match as a part of Senior Day, but it will not be the last time fans will get a chance to see the group on Warrior Field as the Warriors are in line to host their TSC quarterfinal match next week.
Webber finishes the regular season with an overall record of 7-4-1 and a record of 5-4-1 in The Sun Conference, while Keiser, the regular-season TSC champion, improved to 14-1-1 and 10-0-0.
Webber began the match clearly taking a defensive approach as the Warriors kept nine to 10 players back on defense for the majority of the first half.
Ultimately, the strategy worked until the 23rd minute when Keiser got on the board and then opened up the flood gates. Keiser finished the opening half with 17 shots after firing 13 during the final 22-and-a-half-minutes of the period. Meanwhile, the Warriors were held without a shot for the entirety of the match.
The star of the match for Webber was McKinney, who made 14 saves in her nearly 86 minutes of action being giving way to Kearns in the final four minutes for her first action of the season. Kearns' appearance in the match was one of the most heartfelt moments of the season for Webber as Kearns has spent the majority of her final season on the injury list.
Although no official announcement has been made, Webber's opponent for the quarterfinal round of The Sun Conference Tournament appears to be Warner University, which finished its respective season 5-5 in The Sun Conference (7-6 overall with one nonconference match remaining), and is fifth in the conference standings. The Warriors defeated the Royals by a score of 2-1 in their season opener back on September 6, and then on September 23, were victorious by a score of 4-1 as Webber earned the season sweep.
The upcoming quarterfinal match will be played on either Friday, November 3, or Saturday, November 4, on Warrior Field.
