BABSON PARK, Fla. (November 4, 2017) – The Webber International University women's soccer team dominated the ball during regulation and outshot the Royals 14-2 in the first 90 minutes, but the Warriors were unable to convert on a score as Webber fell to Warner University, 1-0, during The Sun Conference Tournament Quarterfinals in overtime on a beautiful Saturday morning at Warrior Field.
The winning goal from Warner's Denise Ortiz came less than 30 seconds into the overtime period as the Royals had a plan of attack, and executed that plan to perfection, leaving the Warriors stunned.
The Warriors opened up the match firing five shots in the first 17 minutes, three of which came from
Luiza Oliveira, to try and set the tone. Oliveira added another shot attempt in the final minute of the first half as Warner's goalkeeper, Sarah Bergkvist, came up with her third save of the half.
Webber continued to play as the more aggressive team in the second half, outshooting the Royals 8-1 as
Madison Pike fired three shots in the period, two on goal, but still could not hit the back of the net for the Warriors.
The missed opportunities would go on to haunt the Warriors as Bergkvist finished the match with six saves, keeping her team alive to steal the victory in overtime.
Oliveira finished with four shots on the match to lead both teams and had two shots on goal.
Sydney Bailey,
Isabella Aviolla and
Laura Borders finished with two shots each, while
Saoirse Browne added one shot.
Pike, a freshman from Lake Wales, Florida, finished the season as Webber's leading goal scorer with eight, and was followed by Borders, a senior also from Lake Wales, with five.
Francesca Mascali,
Rachel Osborne and
Angelina Conde each finished with two goals on the season, while senior goalkeeper
Sarah McKinney (Fruitland Park, Fla.) finished her final campaign with 67 saves in 11 matches.
It is often noted how difficult it can be to defeat a team three times in the same season in many sports, and that sentiment held true on Saturday as Webber finished its season with a final record of 7-5-1 overall. Webber had previously defeated Warner (8-7) twice this season, but it is the Royals who will go on to face the top seed in the tournament, Keiser University.
