Women’s soccer battles Thomas University to a tie

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (October 25, 2017) – Freshman Madison Pike scored her fourth goal in five matches with under five minutes remaining in regulation to tie the match, and that would be all she wrote as the Webber International University women's soccer team finished with a 1-1 tie against Thomas University on Wednesday at TU Soccer Complex.

In its first tie of the season, Webber's record moved to 7-3-1 overall on the year and to 5-3-1 in The Sun Conference, while Thomas moved to 6-7-2 and 3-5-1. Webber maintains its position in fourth place in the conference standings, while Thomas remains just outside the conference postseason picture in eighth place.

After a scoreless first half in which Webber was outshot 13-2, the Night Hawks scored first in the 51st minute moments after a free kick to take the lead. However, Pike answered to tie the match with what was her team-leading eighth goal in the 86th minute when her shot deflected off the bottom of the crossbar and into the right side of the net. Laura Borders connected with Pike, whose shot came from just outside the top of the box.

Francesca Mascali fired both of Webber's shots in overtime as her first was blocked one minute into the first overtime period and her second was saved in the 96th minute.

Borders led Webber with five shots total and three on goal, while Sarah McKinney recorded seven stops in 110 minutes. Mascali added three shots for the Warriors with one on goal, Isabella Aviolla and Pike each finished with two shots, and Luiza Oliveira and Amanda Cypriano each added another shot on goal.

Webber's Senior Day is up next as the Warriors host Keiser University at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, at Warrior Field. Keiser currently leads The Sun Conference with an overall record of 13-1-1 and a TSC mark of 9-0 as the Warriors will have a great chance to prove themselves against one of the top teams the conference has to offer.
