Men’s soccer suffers heartbreaker on Senior Day

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 25, 2017) – Senior goalkeeper Randy Chesson finished with a career-high 12 saves and the Warriors as a team had a season-high 30 shots, but in the end it would not be enough as the Webber International University men's soccer team's attempt to capture its first win in The Sun Conference was thwarted in the second overtime period of a 3-2 loss, Wednesday, against Florida Memorial University on what was the Warrior's Senior Day at Warrior Field.

In addition to Chesson, Sam Todd, Noel Omondi, Juan Pablo Zambrano, Reiss Liggit and Ben Bouchier were each recognized prior to kickoff as a part of the festivities for honoring their contributions to Warrior men's soccer.

After an own goal by Webber (2-9-1 overall, 0-7-1 TSC) just before the 21st-minute mark, Zambrano, a senior from Bogota, Colombia, answered less than three minutes later with a header off the cross from Czeslaw Mamos to tie the match at 1-1.

Head Coach Neil Cockburn spoke on the effort from his players on Wednesday, "I am very proud of my seniors for stepping up and making it one of the best games we have played this season."

Next, after falling down 2-1 at the intermission, Webber came out like a team on a mission in the second half, firing five shots and three corner kicks in a four-minute span early in the period, and then firing four shots and two corner kicks during a two-minute span starting in the 61st minute to try and get back into it.

After six shots and three corners during a six-and-a-half-minute span staring in the 72nd minute, the Warriors finally netted the equalizer as Gary Obrien connected on a free kick from about 25 yards out with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation.

Webber finished the second half outshooting Florida Memorial (1-9, 1-7) 18-4, and that theme continued into the first overtime period as the Warriors fired six shots, forcing four saves from the Lions goalkeeper, Gabriel Mateucci, to keep the match going.

Omondi, Obrien, Robert Green and Diachi Arahara were among those who had good looks at the goal for Webber in the first overtime period.

After Chesson, (Brandon, Fla.) added two more saves early in the second overtime period, Florida Memorial scored the winning goal in what was officially the 103rd minute as the Warriors failed to get a shot attempt in the final frame.

In addition to Chesson's career-day in goal, Omondi, a senior from London, England, fired a career-high 10 shots with four on goal. MacKinley Burns and Charlie Lambert each added three shots while Brandon Byrne, Obrien, Aldo Lopez, Zambrano, Fernando Lozano and Arahara each added two for a Warriors team that had a season-high in shots.

Webber's final match of 2017 will see the Warriors travel to West Palm Beach, Florida, to battle the second-place team in The Sun Conference, Keiser University, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 28.
