LAKELAND, Fla. (October 21, 2017) – The Webber International University football team traveled to Lakeland, Florida, to play Polk Country rival and 14th-ranked Southeastern University during Homecoming Weekend for the Fire on Saturday night. The Warriors got off to a slow start in the opening quarter and never recovered, falling 56-7 on Victory Field.
Garry Chouloute completed 14 of his 28 pass attempts for 120 yards and one touchdown, which was an eight-yard pass to
Timothy Miller with 4:13 on the clock in the third quarter.
Marcus Mannerstedt converted on the extra-point attempt, and has yet to miss this season on 16 tries.
Jeremiah Harris led the Warriors' receiving corps with five catches for 31 yards, while
Jeremiah Lucas,
Nick Marill and Miller each added three catches. Chouloute and fellow-quarterback
Antwan Washington were responsible for Webber's longest rushes of the evening at 13 and 12 yards, respectively.
Senior
Tyson Burch was the star defensively for the Warriors, finishing with 11 total tackles, a tackle for a loss and a forced fumble.
Trevonte Haynie and
Shaunski Lawrence were next with six tackles each.
Southeastern scored on each of its first four drives in the opening quarter, and took advantage of short drives by the Warriors and a fumble on the first play of Webber's third possession of the game.
Down 13-0 less than five minutes in, Webber trailed 27-0 after one quarter and then faced a 47-0 halftime deficit after the Fire returned an interception 73 yards for a touchdown and then added another score with less than 30 seconds before the intermission.
Also of note, the Warriors did block two Southeastern extra-point attempts (Burch and
Terrence Bailey), the first of which came on the first score of the game on the opening drive.
With the loss, Webber falls to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the Mid-South Conference Sun Division, while Southeastern improves to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the division.
Next up, Webber will have its second off week during the month of October, and will then play at Ave Maria University on Saturday, November 4. Webber's Senior Day will take place on Saturday, November 11, as the Warriors host rival Warner University.
