Warrior football wins big, gets back to .500 in division

AVE MARIA, Fla. (November 4, 2017) – Emmil Glover had a 20-yard return for a touchdown off of a blocked punt by Terrence Bailey, and Shaunski Lawrence had a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown as the Webber International University football team took down Ave Maria University 42-10 on Saturday at Gyrene Field.

In addition to the high scoring outburst, the second time this season Webber has reached 42 or more points, the Warriors finished the game holding the Gyrenes to only two net rushing yards and only 2.2 yards per play on offense.

With the win, Webber improved to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the Mid-South Conference Sun Division, while Ave Maria fell to 2-7 and 1-3 with its fifth straight loss.

Sophomore place kicker Marcus Mannerstedt converted on all five of his field goal attempts on the afternoon, including kicks of 38 and 45 yards as he carried the bulk of the scoring load for the Warriors.

Quarterback Garry Chouloute completed 24 of his 39 pass attempts and finished with 213 yards through the air as he connected with tight end Nick Marill on a 10-yard score to put Webber ahead 16-0 in the first half. The touchdown pass was set up by an interception from Dequan Harvin.

Webber needed to gain just 82 yards to score three times in the opening 15 minutes. The Warriors took the opening drive of the game 43 yards down the field in 12 plays, leading to the first field goal by Mannerstedt from 38 yards away. On the first Ave Maria drive, Bailey blocked the punt, and Glover returned it 20 yards for another Warrior touchdown.

Each of the next five scores in the game were provided by the field goal kickers as the trading of field goals gave Webber a 28-3 lead early in the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter saw three of the game's five touchdowns scored. Webber scored first on the 40-yard interception return by Lawrence and then again on a one-yard touchdown run from Austin Logue to finish a nine-play, 70-yard drive with just under five and a half minutes remaining in the game.

Four Warriors rushed for over 20 yards as Logue, a senior from Jacksonville, Florida, would finish with 26 rushing yards on eight carries, Jeremiah Harris added five rushes for 25 yards, Chouloute ran 12 times for 24 yards, and Jalen Cayo rushed six times for 21 yards.

Harris also led all players in receptions with six for 44 yards, while Marill led both teams in receiving yards with 81 on his four catches. Timothy Miller also grabbed five catches for 38 yards, and Jeremiah Lucas caught four passes for 29 yards.

Senior Tyson Burch led the Webber defense with 13 tackles, one tackle for a loss and a sack, Cory Cotnoir added five tackles and 2.5 tackles for a loss, and Keith Neal made two tackles for a loss and had a forced fumble. James Mallory forced another fumble for the Warriors while Marquez Hollis was the third Warrior to come away with an interception.

Trevonte Haynie and Aaron Givens both matched Cotnoir with five tackles, and were both one of nine Warriors who finished with a tackle for a loss. Lastly, Givens, Burch and Cotnoir joined Willie Edom and Adam Kuh as Warriors to earn a sack.

Next up, Webber's final game of the season will see the Warriors host Crooked Lake foe Warner University during Senior Day at Legion Field in Lake Wales, Florida, one week from today, Saturday, November 11, at 1:30 p.m.
