McKinney stops career-high 17 shots in loss at Saint Thomas

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (October 21, 2017) – In a matchup between the two teams tied for third in The Sun Conference women's soccer standings, the Webber International University women's soccer team fell on the road to nationally-recognized Saint Thomas University by a score of 1-0 on Saturday at Bobcat Field.

Webber, which falls to 7-3 overall and 5-3 in the conference after the loss, will still be heading to the postseason to compete in The Sun Conference Tournament. Saint Thomas, who is receiving votes in the latest NAIA national poll, saw its record rise to 9-2-1 and 6-2 with the win on what was also its senior day.

The standout of the match from Webber's perspective was senior goalkeeper Sarah McKinney, who stopped 17 of the 18 shots on goal she faced to give the Warriors a chance to stay in it.

Webber had back-to-back shot attempts early in the first half from Dominiq Gist (saved) and Sydney Bailey (wide), and then had another shot attempted saved, this time from Luiza Oliveira, just over two minutes into the second half.

Immediately following Oliveira's shot attempt, Isabella Aviolla had back-to-back corner kick opportunities, but the Warriors still came up empty before a stretch of 11 consecutive shots by the Bobcats over a nearly 12-minute span resulted in the lone goal of the match in the 60th minute as the Warriors ultimately fell victim to Saint Thomas' sixth shutout of the season.

Webber's final chance came on a blocked shot by Madison Pike just before the final minute, and then another corner-kick try from Aviolla with only 26 seconds remaining did not lead to another shot attempt.

Next up for the Warriors will be the team's final road match of the regular season as Webber heads to Thomasville, Georgia, to face Thomas University at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25. Thomas is currently just outside of the conference playoff picture, but can still play its way into the postseason.
