Women’s volleyball continues dominance over Florida Memorial

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (October 14, 2017) – Senior Michelle Calderon led the way for the Warriors with 22 digs, a career-high for three-set matches, as she helped the Webber International University women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-23) sweep of Florida Memorial University on Saturday at the FMU Wellness Center.

Saturday's win marked the 20th in a row for Webber over Florida Memorial since 2005. The Warriors have now earned 17 sweeps in the 20 matches over that span. With the win, Webber improved to a 17-4 overall and 10-1 in The Sun Conference, remaining only one match behind Saint Thomas University in the loss column, while Florida Memorial fell to 5-11 and 2-6.

In the first set on Saturday, Webber led big at 13-5 before the Lions came all the way to tie it at 13. Webber then trailed 18-16 before freshman Emily Bowen connected on back-to-back kills on assists from sophomore Carlee Baxter to tie the set again.

Tied 20-20, Bowen then earned another kill followed by a service ace to help the Warriors take five of the final six points and win the first set.

Webber again led early in the second set, this time at 6-1, before Florida Memorial again came back to tie things up, this time at 12-12. However, consecutive kills by freshman Cameron Neely (two), Bowen, Amber Lake and Brittany Taksas (two) helped Webber hold on to an advantage it would not give up.

The third and final set ended with Webber winning each of the final four points after the Lions went on a 7-1 run to go ahead 23-21 and threaten the possibility of a fourth set. Taksas, Kyleigh Stottlemyer and Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu each had a kill during the final four points.

Taksas and Salanoa-Sagaopolu would go on to finish with 11 kills and four blocks apiece while Bowen added nine kills and Neely also had seven kills and two blocks. Baxter dished 37 assists and had seven digs, while Gilmary Ramos added nine digs to go along with the 22 from Calderon. Jessica Terry added six digs for her third-highest output of the season in the category.

Next up, Webber will host the University of Saint Francis tomorrow for Homecoming Weekend. The match will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 15, and is the final home match for the Warriors before beginning a five-match road swing.
