SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Webber Warriors beat the host Morningside Mustangs 5-2 today advancing them in the winner's bracket. They will face Auburn Montgomery tomorrow, Saturday, at 4 p.m. (central time).
The unranked, underdog, Cinderella Warriors are on a 7 game win streak that includes knocking off #8 William Carey, #10 Southeastern, and #15 Morningside Iowa. They now shift their focus to #2 ranked Auburn Montgomery who is also two time defending National Champions.
In the bottom of the 1st inning, following a groundout to 3rd by
Shanelly Brown,
Alyssa Householder shot a single into right field to give the Warriors their first baserunner.
Brandi Hazen then stepped to the plate, with a 2-2 count; Hazen did what Hazen does best and crushed a 2-run shot over the centerfield fence and gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the 3rd inning, with 2 outs the Mustangs offense came alive with 3 straight singles that plated 1 run. This made the score 2-1.
In the bottom of the 3rd the Warriors answered by
Shanelly Brown smacking a double to right to lead off the inning. Householder dropped a sacrifice bunt to third base that would advance Brown to third. Hazen drew a walk followed by
Laura Borders that dropped a sacrifice squeeze bunt scoring Brown.
Erika Bellinger then got in on the action smashing a double to left field that scored Hazen. This gave the warriors a 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the 4th Webber struck again. Brown singled to center then Householder smacked a double into right that scored Brown. Morningside added one more run in the top of the 6th as Rachel Koch homered.
The Warriors went on to snap the Mustangs 8 game winning streak and taking their own streak to 7 wins in a row. Warriors,
Erika Bellinger improves to 12-3 on the year off the mound as she threw the complete game striking out 6 and only surrendering 5 hits and 2 runs.
Webber International University continues to stun its critics and will move on to play the 2 time defending National Champions the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks at 4 p.m. Central time tomorrow.
