WALESKA, Ga – Late inning heroics found the Lady Warriors advancing to the Reinhardt Bracket Championship after defeating the Huntington Foresters 2-1.
The Lady Warriors found themselves hitless today until
Shanelly Brown singled up the middle in the bottom of the 4th. They would not get another hit until the bottom of the 6th inning when
Kara Seymour dropped down a crafty bunt and beat the throw for a base hit. However, going into the bottom of the 7th inning, Emily Puterbaugh, the pitcher for the Lady Foresters, had kept the Lady Warriors to only two hits and was pitching a gem.
Brandi Hazen, the Sun Conference player of the year, stepped to the plate as the first hitter of the 7th inning for the Lady Warriors. She took the count to 3-0; the next pitch was a strike right down the middle taking the count to 3-1. Hazen knew what she was doing when she took the next pitch yard over the right field fence tying the game 1-1. The foresters were able to escape the inning with minimal damage. The bottom of the 8th inning started off with
Shanelly Brown reaching first on an error by the pitcher. With 1 out,
Brandi Hazen again stepped to the plate. With a 1-0 count she sat back and blistered a ball down the right field line for a double scoring Brown and giving the Lady Warriors the walk-off victory and advancing them to the Reinhardt Bracket Championship.
Kayla Montgomery started the game for the Lady Warriors on the mound, after 3 innings and only 1 earned run she gave way to
Erika Bellinger who pitched 5 innings surrendering 3 hits and earning the win.
#2 Reinhardt University, the host of the tournament, has just been eliminated by #1 William Carey in the consolation bracket. This means that the #4 Lady Warriors will wait to see who wins tonight's game between the #3 Huntington University Foresters and the #1 William Carey University Crusaders. The winner of that matchup will play the Lady Warriors in tomorrow's Reinhardt Bracket Championship at 1 p.m. Webber will need to be beaten twice in ordered to be dethroned. The Winner of tomorrows Reinhardt Championship Bracket will punch their ticket to the 2016 NAIA World Series in Iowa.
