Baseball Rebounds in Game Two to Split Series with St. Francis

BABSON PARK, Fla. – Webber International University baseball hosted the University of St. Francis, Wednesday, for an early afternoon doubleheader. The Fighting Saints took game one, 13-3, but the Warriors rallied in game two to win, 7-6, in extra innings.

Sjaghbar Martis continues to hit well this week, going 4-8 with an RBI against St. Francis. Connor Clayton and Taylor Layner led the charge in the game two come back. Clayton finished the series 3-7 with three RBI, while Layner went 1-5 with three RBI of his own.

The game was off to a cracking start, with four total runs scored in the first inning. St. Francis picked up three in the top of the inning, with a Ramon Sanchez double cutting the advantage by one.

In the third, Webber International and the Fighting Saints traded runs. Martis delivered a RBI single through the right side, cutting the Warriors deficit to 4-2.

St. Francis would go on to outscore Webber International, 9-1, to close out the game.

In game that saw the Warriors trial throughout, Webber International never gave up and eventually walked off with a victory.

The Fighting Saints were the first on the board, scoring three in the top of the fourth. Clayton responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homerun to deep left-center, to bring the score to 3-2 in favor of St. Francis.

In the top of the seventh, St. Francis pushed ahead, 5-2, putting Webber International on the brink of defeat, but they would not go down without a fight.

The Warriors loaded the bases with the first three at-bats of the inning. Layner then stepped in to the batter's box and delivered again, this time with a single past the shortstop to drive in two runs. A throwing error by the St. Francis catcher allowed another run to score, tying the game at 5-5, forcing extra innings.

Down to their last out the Fighting Saints were able to squeak across another run, putting Webber International on the brink again, but again the Warriors would have answer.

Sanchez and Martis once again pulled through, with Sanchez making his way to third. Clayton promptly supplied a timely RBI-double to draw even, 6-6.

After an intentional walk, Layner completed his game two heroics with a walk off sacrifice fly.
