Box Score 2 BABSON PARK, Fla. – Webber International University baseball hosted Bluefield College for an afternoon double-header, Saturday afternoon. The Warriors took game one, 1-0, and completed the sweep with a, 7-4, victory in game two.
Sjaghbar Martis had a big day going 3-6, with two RBI and a stolen base. Brett Kaminski also hit well, picking up three hits and a game-winning RBI. Taylor Layner was stellar on the mound in game one, picking up his second win of the young season. Layner pitched a complete-game shutout against the Rams, striking out eight and allowing only three hits.
Bluefield 0, Webber International 1
The Warriors and Rams kicked off the day with a pitcher's duel. Layner and Bluefield College's Michael Carpenter were both tossing shutouts till Webber International picked up a walk-off victory.
Connor Clayton kicked off the bottom of the seventh with a well-earned walk. Daniel Timmons hit a sharp grounder to shortstop allowing, pinch runner, Derrick Pezon to advance to second.
Lenin Sanchez then drew a walk of his own, while Pezon took advantage of the wayward pitch and stole third base. Sanchez showed speed during the next at-bat, stealing second. With runners on second and third, Kaminski shot a walk-off single to left center, giving the Warriors the, 1-0, victory.
Bluefield 4, Webber International 7
Game two between Webber International and Bluefield College was a barnburner, cut short due to rain, ending with the Warriors topping the Rams, 7-4.
Three walks, a hit-by-pitch and three stolen bases allowed the Warriors to push home a run in the first inning without registering a hit. With the bases loaded, Malcom Smith picked up an RBI with a walk, putting Webber International ahead, 1-0.
A Warrior error in the outfield allowed the Rams to tie the game up at 1-1. Martis put the Warriors back in the lead, 2-1, after hitting a double to deep left center in the bottom of the third.
Webber International's offense exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Two passed ball and RBI from Clayton, Martis and Kevin Cicali pushed the Warriors advantage to 7-1.
Bluefield College started a rally in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs, before the game was called due to rain.
