Baseball Splits Doubleheader, Takes Series Over Ave Maria

BABSON PARK, Fla. – Webber International University baseball closed out a three-game series, Saturday, with an afternoon doubleheader against Ave Maria. A late-game comeback gave the Warriors a win in game one, 5-4, but fell in game two, 7-5.

Sjaghbar Martis was stellar in the doubleheader, going 4-7 with a RBI. Taylor Layner pitched well in game one, throwing eight innings, striking out seven and allowed no earned runs.

The Warriors found themselves down, 4-1, but came back in the bottom of ninth to win out, 5-4.

Ramon Sanchez led off the inning with a double to left center. Two batter later, Jake Frisosky drove Sanchez in to kick start the comeback.

A double from Martis and a single from Mike Castilla, tied the game up at 4-4. Two batter later, Lewis Alex Rodriguez hit a walk off single to secure the Warriors, 5-4, win.

After a tightly contested game, Ave Maria had a big eight inning to defeat the Warriors, 7-5.

Webber International took an early, 3-0, lead after just two innings. R. Sanchez, Daniel Alves and Lenin Sanchez picked up RBI during the early offensive outburst.

After six inning, the Gyrenes were able to tie the game and eventually jumped ahead, 7-3, after eight.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Warriors saw another comeback fall just short, eventually losing out 7-5.
