Box Score BABSON PARK, Fla. - Webber International University honored three seniors Wednesday in their match against Southeastern University. The Warriors would find themselves faced with a strong challenge from the Fire, but were able to dig deep and come away with a 5 set win 21-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 15-8. Two of the seniors,
Katie Schueman and
Nikki McDaniel, were huge in helping the Warriors come away with the victory.
Nikki McDaniel finished with a match high 22 kills and 12 digs to give her a double-double, and Schueman provided 10 kills while hitting a match high .350, and was a dominant force on the net with 5 solo blocks and 4 block assists.
Tessa Colden also had a double-double with 17 kills and 19 digs,
Carlee Baxter had 51 assists, and Michele Calderon had 30 digs.
The first set saw Southeastern control early on, jumping out to a 10-1 lead early on. As the set progressed, the Warriors would slowly chip away at the lead, using multiple small runs to bring them closer. Webber pulled it to 16-19 before Southeastern would pull away and take the set. Schueman and Colden both had 4 kills in the set.
Set two saw the Fire have a similar hot start, putting the Warriors in a 1-5 hole early. Webber then used a 3-0 run to get close, which Southeastern responded to with a 3-0 run of their own. After trading points, the Fire pulled away late, putting the Warriors down 11-18. Digging deep as they have done all year, the Warriors responded with an 8-2 run to pull within a point. Battling back and forth, Webber tied the match at 22-22, then scored the final three points to secure the set.
Brianna Baez had 3 kills in the set, and Schueman had 2 of her solo blocks.
After the break, the Warriors came out strong to start the third set. After being tied 5-5 early, Webber used a 7-1 run to take a commanding lead. Southeastern would then follow suit with an 9-3 run of their own to tie the set at 15-15. Webber would take a two point lead and held it late at 22-20, but the Fire would end on a 5-0 run to take the set and go up 2-1 in the match.
Set four saw Webber in control from the start. They began with a 3-0 run immediately, and pushed themselves out to a 10-4 lead early. After Southeastern pulled the score to 11-9, Webber used a 9-1 run to fully take control of the set. Southeastern made a series of runs late, but the Warriors earned the points they needed to tie the match up at 2-2.
In the final set, both teams came out to battle. Southeastern would force Webber into a 1-3 hole early before the Warriors tied it back up. After staying tied at 5-5, Webber used a 4-0 run to take a lead they would never relinquish in the set. The Fire would continue to fight hard, getting as close as 9-7, but the Warriors stayed composed and finished the set on a 6-1 run to close out the match.
