Box Score BABSON PARK, Fla. - In the semi-final round of the Sun Conference Volleyball Tournament, Webber International University would play host to Kesier University. In a thrilling match, the Warriors (27-2) would down the Seahawks (21-8) in four sets 18-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-10 to advance to the Sun Conference Finals.
Nikki McDaniel led the way with 21 kills, while
Tessa Colden and
Katie Schueman added 13 and 11, respectively.
Carlee Baxter had 50 assists on the night, and the defense was anchored by
Michelle Calderon's 29 digs and Colden's 20, giving her a double-double.
Gilmary Ramos also added a career high 18 digs, part of a 92 dig effort by the Warriors.
Set one saw the Seahawks determined to pull the upset, as they scored the first six points of the match. They were able to hold their lead and push the Warriors into a 4-11 hole before Webber used a 6-2 run the cut the deficit to three. However, Keiser would hold the lead, allowing the Warriors as close as 17-18, then using a 7-1 run to close out and win the set. McDaniel had 6 kills in the set, and Calderon 7 digs.
Set two saw a closer beginning at 2-2 before Keiser used a 9-4 run to take a lead.The Warriors then responded, using their own 8-2 run to take a 14-13 lead. Keiser would tie it up at 15-15, but Webber used strong serving and a relentless defense to end the set on a 10-2 run and tie the match. McDaniel had another 6 kills, and Baxter added 14 assists in the set.
Set three was an absolute battle from start to finish. Neither team held larger than a two point lead early on in a set that saw 11 score ties and 5 lead changes. At 15-15 Webber would earn two in a row to take the lead, only for Keiser to earn two of their own right back. After pushing to 20-19, the Warriors dug deep and scored the last five points to take the set and the 2-1 lead in the match. Colden and McDaniel each had 6 kills, and Ramos had 11 digs in the set alone.
Set four was controlled by Webber from start to finish. They jumped out early with a 5-1 lead, and continued to roll from there, using a 5-2 run to further push the lead. The Warriors used a 90% side out percentage in the set to ensure the Seahawks made no runs, while also using their serve and defense to ensure multiple runs of their own. At 15-6, Webber finished on a 10-4 run to claim the fourth set and seal the match, allowing them to move onto the championship game.
Keiser was led by Nikki McKown with 14 kills and Veera Hietala with 7. Nicole Papineau had 34 assists, and Morgan Leff added 18 digs.
The Warriors return to the court today in the Sun Conference Championship match against St. Thomas University. First serve is set for 2:00 PM.
