Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Webber International University women's soccer opened the season on the road, Sunday evening, against Eckerd College. In a hard fought match, the Warriors were narrowly edged by the Tritons, 4-3.
The Warriors wasted no time take the lead, when
Cierra Abundez, last season's leading goal scorer, netted her first goal of 2015 in the second minute. In the 20th minute, Eckerd drew a foul in the box to set up a penalty kick. The Triton's Stephanie Evans stepped up to the spot but, senior keeper
Kayla Hanel made a huge save to preserve the Warriors lead.
Webber International's defense was strong throughout the first half, limiting the Tritons to just one shot on goal. Unfortunately, Eckerd was able to tie the score just before halftime on a converted free kick to even the score at 1-1.
The offense picked up in the second half, with five goals finding the back of the net. It was Abundez who once again put the Warriors ahead, this time with a great left-footed strike from distance. Eckerd responded with two answered goals, in the 66th minute and 71st, to take its first lead of the match.
With seven minutes left in the match, the Tritons pushed thier lead to 4-2. Seconds later, freshman
Juliana Fuentes netted her first career goal to cut the Warriors deficit to 4-3.
The Warriors were unable to find an equalizer and when the final whistle blew, the Warriors had fallen to Eckerd College, 4-3.
Webber International is back in action, Thursday, September 24 in a road match against Johnson and & Wales.
