Women’s Soccer Falls Late to Thomas in Sun Conference Quarterfinal

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Webber International University women's soccer opened Sun Conference tournament play, Monday, on the road against Thomas University. After holding the lead for the majority of the match, a late flurry from the Nighthawks down the Warriors, 3-2.

The first half was tightly contested, with both teams playing strong defense. Chances on goal were few and far between as five shots were blocked in the half, while four were saved. After 44 minutes of hardnosed defense, the Warriors' Jenna Muphy capitalized on an opportunity in front of goal, giving Webber International the lead.

The Warriors took momentum into the second half, scoring a second goal just three minutes in. Janel Ebanks netted her second goal of the season to put Webber International ahead, 2-0.

Five minutes later, Thomas scored its first goal and turned the momentum of the match. The Nighthawks tied the match on a tough penalty call. A minute later, the Warriors drew a penalty of their own, but unfortunately Cierra Abundez's attempt as saved.

Webber International's offense continued to search for a game winner, with Murphy and Abundez both nearly finding it. With eight minutes left to play, Thomas took the lead and would not relinquish it, taking the match, 3-2.
