Box Score BABSON PARK, Fla, - Webber International University men's soccer hosted conference opponent SCAD, Sunday, playing out a 1-1 draw against the Bees.
The first half saw both teams play hard, with strong defense and good offense coming from both sides. Sophomore goalkeeper Randy Chesson came up with two big saves early on to keep the game level.
In the 27th minute, the Warriors mounted a quick counter attack, eventually putting Sam Todd one-on-one with the SCAD net minder. Todd was tried to escape the oncoming keeper, but was tripped up, setting up a penalty kick. Todd stepped up to the spot and calmly put the ball in the back of the net to give the Warriors an early, 1-0, lead.
Just 7 minutes later, the Bees found an equalizer, sending the teams into half time tied up at 1-1.
The second half was very physical, seeing four yellow card and no goals. In the closing minutes of the second half, the Warriors unleashed a flurry of three shots that were just inches from wide from ending the match. In the 73rd minute, Tim Stanfordd played a perfect ball destined for the back of the net but the Warriors game winner found the post instead. With the score at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the teams moved on to overtime.
SCAD controlled the first overtime period, taking six shoots and three corners kicks, while shutting out the Webber International offense. Chesson was crucial in forcing a second overtime, making two saves and multiple important punch outs.
The final overtime period was all Webber International. The Warrior offense was unrelenting, creating four shots and four corners. A long ball found a streaking Ross Clarke open in front of goal, but a close hand ball call wiped the Warriors game winner off the board. In the 118th minute, a perfectly played ball by Ivan Bakovic connected with Todd on the right side of the pitch, Todd motored past the defender but saw his shot go just wide of the left post and the foot of a streaking Driss Baraket.
After 120 minutes of high intensity soccer the final whistle blew with the score deadlocked at 1-1.
The Warriors are back in action, Wednesday, October 7 at 7 p.m. with a road match against archrival Warner.
