BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Webber International University Lady Warriors basketball team hosted the Southeastern University Lady Fire Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. following the men's game.
The Lady Fire started the night off with a 3-point shot, answered shortly after by the Lady Warriors, taking a small lead, 7-6 in the first minute of the game. The Lady Fire took it back, 9-7 but only for a second.
Jessica Colson would make three 3-point shots for the Lady Warriors in the matter of minutes and secure a 9-point gap, 20-11. After a few turns, Colson would make yet another 3-point shot just in time before the buzzer. The Lady Warriors played hard and refused to hand it over. In the last five minutes in the game, Colson made two additional 3-pointers, putting her at 6-8 from the field and 38-24 for the Lady Warriors with 3:14 left to play in the first half. Through out the first half, LaQuandra Brazill put up 14 points for the Lady Warriors, going 6-6 from the field. The Lady Warriors would take a 17 - point lead into the locker room, 41-24.
Things started to heat up into the second half as the Lady Fire made a hard attempt at closing the gap. Within seven minutes of play the Lady Fire closed in, 42-48. The Lady Warriors made a humble recovery in the subsequent minutes of play, but it wouldn't last long.
With 3:07 left in the game, the Lady Fire got close with 56-59 and after two good free throws, sat just one under the Lady Warriors at 58-59, making it a quick and ugly turn around for the Lady Warriors.
With 7.2 seconds left in play, the Lady Fire scored a 3-pointer, tying the game, 63-63, and with a failed attempt at the basket in the last second of play, the game went into overtime.
In overtime, the Lady Warriors outscored the Lady Fire 9-6 to win the game, 72-69.
Leading the Lady Warriors on the court were: LaQuandra Brazill with 19 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals;
Deslyn Applewhaite with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists,
Quanthavia Stalworth, with 6 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 block; and
Jessica Colson, with 18 points.
Webber will return to action on Thursday as they host conference opponent, St. Thomas University Lady Bobcats at 5 p.m. in the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
