Box Score BABSON PARK, Fla – For only the second time in school history, Webber International University took on the rival school from across the lake, Warner University in football. The game was played at Legion Field in Lake Wales, featuring the Warner Royals as the home team. Fans from both schools packed the stadium with excitement. In 2013, the first meeting of these two teams in football, it was the Warriors that took home the trophy with a score of 23-0. The Royals came out today seeking revenge and to recover the Lake Caloosa Clash trophy from the previous year.
Warner won the opening toss and elected to receive. Following a 20-yard opening kick return by Rahim Booker, the Royals were putting together what looked to be a decent drive. The quarterback for Warner, Darrin Davis #10 dropped back to make a pass only four minutes into the game, instead of finding a Royals receiver, it landed in the hands of Webber's #3
Ronnie Hardison, who then returned it 68 yards and a Warriors Touchdown. Other than a field goal by the Warriors kicker
Daniel Le Zotte that was good for 33 yards in the late seconds of the 2
nd quarter, both offenses stayed quiet through the first half. At the end of the first half it was the Warriors headed to the locker room with a 10-0 lead knowing they would receive the ball to start the second half.
The Warriors opening drive of the second half looked promising for an offensive run. In the midst of a good drive down the field, a storm would move in, with lightning nearby the game was forced to go into delay. What was thought to be just a short half hour delay turned into a three-hour wait. It is strenuous at that point for an athlete to maintain focus and keep momentum rolling. However, both teams came out fighting and it was the defensive battle that would steal the show for the 3
rd quarter. The Warriors put together three drives totaling 15 plays, 83 yards and no score. The Royals had two drives for 8 plays and a low of 36 yards. It was the 4
th quarter that decided the game.
Webber took a comfortable 10-0 lead into the 4
th quarter. Quarterback for the Warriors,
Billy Pavlock #15, took the offense into the Royals red zone and down to the 10-yard line in the opening drive for what seemed would turn into an eventual Warriors score. Pavlock snapped and rushed to the Warner 7 yard line where he would lose the football and the Royals ended up with the fumble recovery. Quarterback #10 Darrin Davis for the Royals started the drive by rushing for 3 yards. He then threw a 90 yard pass completion to Lester Lewis who took the ball in for a touchdown and made the score 10-7 Warriors still on top. Warner's defense stopped the next drive by Webber quickly to force a punt in 4 plays. The Royals took the ball and marched down the field to another touchdown giving them the lead of 14-10. Webber made a last stand at defense with 1:08 left on the clock by forcing a fumble while Warner was trying to run out down the time.
Daniel Booth #14 for Webber recovered the fumble and ran it back 63 yards for a touchdown. Penalty flags left the pockets of every referee on the field and put Webber fans in distraught. What looked to be a game winning fumble return for the Warriors was called back and the ball awarded to Warner due to a facemask and a personal foul against the Warriors. Webber was out of timeouts and the Royals were able to run out the clock to win 14-10.
Darius Page #26 for the Warriors ran the offense with 27 carries for a total of 158 yards. It was a rough loss for Webber International University whose overall record now falls to 0-2 and 0-1 in Sun Conference play. They will now shift their focus to next week's matchup at Cambellsville University in Kentucky. The game is Saturday September 13
th, at 1:30 p.m.
