BABSON PARK, Fla – The Warriors faced Ave Maria University in a Sun Conference matchup yesterday, October 25
th, 2014. This was a must win game for Webber in order to keep first place in conference play, in their sights. The Warriors went out and beat the Gyrene's by final score of 29-14.
The first quarter started out with an exciting defensive return for the Warriors.
Prince Holloway, now ranked #2 overall in NAIA Division I in punt return yards, returned a punt for a 75 yard touchdown and following a
Daniel LeZotte extra point that was good, the Warriors jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The beginning of the second quarter featured the Warriors defense again scoring a touchdown off of a
Travon Montgomery 49 yard fumble recovery and return. Following the touchdown by Montgomery, it was the Gyrene's that broke through the Warriors line and blocked the extra point attempt leaving the score at 13-0 with a Webber lead.
Darius Page the running back for the Warriors, drove into the end zone scoring the first offensive touchdown and with the LeZotte extra point good, Webber jumped out to a 20-0 lead. Closing down the second half, Ave Maria's quarterback Clayton Uecker connected with the wide receiver Ryan O'Rourke, for a 6 yard pass and a Gyrene's touchdown. With the extra point attempt good by Ave's kicker Brandon Leon, the score was cut to a 20-7 Warriors lead going into half time.
The start of the second half was a slow one for both teams as there was no score change. The fourth showed that the Warriors kept their momentum. Immediately, Brendan Deshield's the running back for the Warriors, after a Webber drive of 9 plays for 69 yards, punched into the end zone with a 22 yard run. Ave again blocked LeZotte's extra point attempt and that gave the Warriors a 26-7 lead. LeZotte had his revenge later in the fourth when he would nail a 36 yard field goal boosting Webber to a 29-7 lead. A final effort from the Gyrene's was a touchdown pass from Travis Makauskas to Troy Olmo for 2 yards. A Leon extra point for Ave cut the lead but in the end it was the Warriors that hunted down the Gyrene's and came out victorious by a final score of 29-14.
