Warriors’ Tennis Upsets #16 St. Thomas

MIAMI, Fla. – The Webber International men's tennis team ventured to Miami Saturday to take on the #16 ranked NAIA team in the nation, St. Thomas University. The Warriors had a happy ride home following an 8-1 win. Webber improves to 6-2 overall for the season. In The Sun Conference, WIU is 3-1.
 
Webber jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Tyler Heath and Carl Ackered scored the first point with an 8-0 win at #2. The #3 team won 8-3. Joonas Jalkeanen and Andres Riobueno played well in helping the Warriors have an advantage going into singles play.
 
The Warriors won all of the singles but had to work hard, pulling out three 3-set wins.
 
Number one player, Daniel Spurny went overtime to win 7-6, 3-6, 6-2. Number four player, Tyler Heath, came from behind to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. Carl Ackered, playing #2, pulled out a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 win. The other Warriors won easily, Valentine Bayh won 6-0, 6-2 at #3. At #5 Marcel Schmitt won 6-3, 6-1. And #6 Alwin Leysner was victorious with a 6-0, 6-1 win.
 
The Warriors, currently ranked #20, should move up in the rankings when the new poll comes out this week. “I am very pleased with the win and I am very proud of our team for playing hard and breaking our four match losing streak to St. Thomas,” stated Coach Bill Heath.
 
The Warriors will be playing at home on Monday at 2:30 p.m. Their opponent will be NAIA foe, University of Saint Francis (IL).
