BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Webber International men's tennis team defeated Northwood University 5-4 on Saturday at the WIU Campus Courts. The extremely intense match turned into a seven hour marathon, finishing around 9:00 p.m., under the lights.
With the match tied at 4-4, Webber's #5 player,
Marcel Schmitt was the last Warrior's hope, and he responded with a hard fought 6-3, 6-3 win to give Webber the team victory.
The Warriors jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the completion of the doubles. Warriors
Tyler Heath and
Carl Ackered picked up the point at #1 doubles with an 8-6 win. At #2 doubles the Warriors tandem of
Valentin Bayh and
Joonas Jalkanen pulled out a heart stopping 9-8 (5) victory.
The two team split the six singles matches and that was all the Warriors needed. In addition to Schmitts win the Warriors
Carl Ackered won at #3 singles 6-1, 6-1.
Daniel Spurny won at #1 singles, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4.
Webber International is now 4-1 for th season overall and moves to 2-1 in The Sun Conference.
WIU will be playing Mount St. Mary's (MD) on Monday at Star Island Resort in Kissimmee. Match time is 3:00 p.m. this is the second NCAA-I School that Webber has played this year.
