Warriors Swept Lions to Advance to The Sun Conference Quarterfinals

Box Score BABSON PARK, Fla. - Warriors, seated eighth in The Sun Conference, are 2-0 this 2011-12 season versus Florida Memorial, seated ninth in The Sun Conference, before they took them on February 20, 2012 in a wildcard game to see which will face off the number one seed Northwood University on in quarterfinals of The Sun Conference playoffs on Tuesday February 21, 2012 at the Seahawks house. Warriors swept Lions to advance to The Sun Conference quarterfinals after a 76-68 victory. Webber made clutch free throws to overpower Florida Memorial in the final few minutes of the game.

Lions came out scoring first, but Warriors battled with them until they took the lead at 15:35 minute after Gabriel Rutledge made an easy bucket in the paint from a perfect pass by Troy Simmons. During that time, Webber went on 12-2 streak from the 17:31 minute mark to 12:48 minute mark. The Lions where not going down again without a fight, they fought back to tie the game at 20-20 with 6 minutes left in the game, and since then both teams fought until halftime, with a score of 31-31.

David Marlar led the Warriors with 8 points where he was perfect (4-4) from the free throw line, 2 rebounds, an assist and a steal. Gabriel Rutledge had 6 rebounds and 6 points, and Jakeem Hill had 7 points and 6 rebounds in the first half. Matthew Rolle from Florida Memorial led first half with 11 points.

Webber International had 6 points off turnovers, 14 points in the paint, 6 second chance points, 8 fast-break points, and 5 points came from the bench. Florida Memorial had 6 points off turnovers, 22 points in the paint, 4 second chance points, no fast-break points, and their bench came up with 8 points. Warriors' largest lead was an eight point advantage which came in at the 10:09 minute mark. Lions largest lead was 4 point advantage at the beginning of the first half with 17:31 minutes left in the game.

Warriors came out with a purpose in the second half; Gabriel Rutledge broke the tie a minute into the second half. Florida Memorial put some pressure on Webber as both teams traded buckets at first until Warriors started to pull away after Jay Philippe's fast-break layup at the 17:11 minute mark which started the 8-0 run over the Lions. Florida Memorial was not going to go down without a fight, they tied pulled together and tied the game 5 times.

Florida Memorial pulled within 3 points (71-68) with 37 seconds left in the game after two good free-throws by Donovin McClendon. Senior Jay Philippe made clutch free throws with the game on the line to extend the lead for the Warriors; he ended the night with 14 points where he was perfect from the free throw line going 12 for 12, he also contributed with 3 assists, and 3 rebounds.

Jakeem Hill led the Warriors to a victory with a double-double where he had 18 points and 11 rebounds; he also had 3 huge blocks and a steal. David Marlar Led the Warriors with 19 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Mark Rolle led the game with 20 points for Florida Memorial, but it was not enough to overthrow Webber and move on to The Sun Conference quarterfinals.

Warriors had 16 points off turnovers, 32 points in the paint, 12 second chance points, 16 fast-break points, and 8 points from the bench. Lions had 9 points off turnovers, 34 points in the paint, 10 second chance points, 6 fast-break points, and their bench came up with 16 points.

Webber International University improves to 10-16 in the season, as Florida Memorial University falls to 6-22 in the season.

Warriors will be back in action on Tuesday February 21, 2012 at West Palm Beach, Fla. as they will play #2 Northwood University at 7 pm in The Sun Conference Quarterfinals.
