#25 Southeastern Forces Webber to a Wildcard Fight for Conference Playoff Berth

Box Score BABSON PARK, Fla. – #25 Southeastern forces Webber to a wildcard fight for its conference spot after a tough 67-74 loss on a senior night on February 16, 2012 at the Sabbagh Athletic Center. Jay Philippe, David Marlar, and Luke Marlar, all seniors, were recognized and honored for their dedication to WIU in their last regular season game of their collegiate career before the game begun.

Warriors came out hot in the first half, where Tyler Auerbacher made the initial bucket, and then the Warriors forced a turnover on Fire to follow up with an easy layup by David Marlar. David Marlar started the 9-0 run at the 15:08 minute mark and Jakeem Hill made the last three in this run at the 13:05 minute mark. Seth Spencer from SEU ended the drought at the 11:08 minute mark. SEU slowly nicked Warriors lead at the end of the first half.

David Marlar was the leader in points with 9; he also came up with a rebound, a steal and 2 assists in the final regular collegiate game of his career. Jay Philippe led with 5 assists, 2 points, and a rebound.

Povilas Gaidys led Southeastern with 8 points, 8 rebounds, a steal, a block, and an assist.

Warriors had 14 points in the paint, 9 points off turnovers, 2 second chance points, 6 fast-break points, and the WIU bench came up with 8 points. Fire had 8 points in the paint, 5 points off turnovers, 6 second chance points, 4 fast-break points, and the SEU bench had 9 points in the first half. Webber led the entire first half, and their largest lead was 14 at the 9:08 minute mark as David Swan made a three pointer. Webber went in with a 36-34 lead into the half.

Warriors came out scoring first in the second half as David Marlar made an easy layup in the paint. Both teams played competitively in the second half trading buckets. Povilas Gaidys gave Southeastern their first lead in the game with his 3 pointer at the 15:57 minute mark, but Jakeem Hill tipped in a missed shot 30 seconds later from his teammate to tie the game at 44-44. Warriors and Fire traded buckets to the end, but Webber was unable to come out with a victory, as they fell 67-74 to # 25 Southeastern.

In the second half, Warriors had 18 points in the paint, 4 points off turnovers, 8 second chance points, 2 fast-break points, and Webbers' bench came up with 6 points. Fire had 12 points in the paint, 2 points off turnovers, 4 second chance points, no fast-break points, and the SEU bench came up with 9 points. Southeastern out-rebounded Webber 37 to 31; however, Warriors forced 14 turnovers and Southeaster forced only 8.

David Marlar led Warriors with 15 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, a block and a steal. Jay Philippe led the Warriors with 7 assists, 11 points, 2 rebounds, and a steal. Luke Marlar ended his regular collegiate game with 2 points.

Povilas Gaidys led Southeastern to a victory with a double-double where he had 17 rebounds and 13 points, and Chris Patterson had a game high with 19 points.

Webber International University fell to 10-15 and 4-12 in The Sun Conference, clinching the eighth spot; whereas, Southeastern University improved to 18-11 and 10-5 in The Sun Conference, clinching thirds spot in the conference.

Warriors who are seated eighth in the conference will be back in action on Monday February 20, 2012 where they will fight Florida Memorial University who are seated ninth in the conference and the tip-off will be at 7 pm in the Sabbagh Athletic Center, and the winner will face off the number once seed in the conference the following day.
