Warriors Tame the Lions

Babson Park, Fla. – Webber International University men's basketball defeated Florida Memorial University 68-46 on Wednesday January 5, 2011.

The Warriors improve their overall record to 6-5 and The Sun Conference record to 2-1, while their conference rival drop to 6-8 and there are tied with Webber in The Sun Conference with a 2-1 record.

Webber started the game with a 3-point made shot by Junior Geidi, and Luke Marlar made a field goal to give Webber 5 point advantage from the start. Warriors did not relinquish their lead since then. The Lions tried to fight back, but they came short. The finished the first half with an amazing steal by Luke Marlar and he made the buzzer beating 3-point shot to give the Warriors a comfortable lead by 16 points with a half time score of WIU 40 and FMU 24.

In the second half, the Lions showed some competition spirit, but their spirit was diminished in the last 10 minutes of the game. Webber saw the free throw line nine times in the second have and they made 6 of 9 shots which helped give the Webber the confidence to finish the game strong against a conference opponent. The game was over when Gabriel Rutledge slam dunked the ball in the second half.

The points off turnovers were even at 13 by both teams, but Webber dominated the points in the paint with 32 while Florida Memorial had 24. The Warriors had 13 second chance points to 7 by their opponent, the game was a little slow for there were only 6 fast break points by the Warriors and the Lions only had 4, both teams had to with their half court matches to earn the victory, and Webber came victorious with a final score of Webber 68 and Florida Memorial 46. Webber's bench came out strong at the game with 27 points to a mere 12 points by the Lions.

The leading scorer for Webber was Tyler Auerbacher with a double-double by means of 14 points and he also added 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and he was perfect at the line. Bryan Portillo had 14 points and 4 rebounds for Florida Memorial University. Gabriel Rutledge had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds with 2 extra assists, a block and a steal.

The Warriors shot 45% from the field, 58.8% from the free throw line, and 33.3% beyond the arc. The Lions shot 28.6% from the field, 18.2% beyond the arc, and 60% from the free throw line.

Webber International University men's basketball will on Saturday January 8, 2011 at St. Thomas University in a conference game, and the tip-off will be at 7 p.m.
