Babson Park, Fla. - A spark was lit in an exciting matchup against Ave Maria University on Monday night giving the Warriors the electricity to pull out the win in double overtime. Without a question the Gyrenes made the Warriors work for every point but were not able to overtake the Warriors in the end. The final score in the double overtime matchup against Ave Maria University was 87-80.
The second half was a battle for the Warriors with Ave Maria responding to every point the Warriors would post. With less than 4 minutes left in the second half the Warriors'
Gabriel Rutledge hit his second free throw putting the Warriors ahead, 64-58. However Ave Maria answered with a 6 point run that ultimately led the teams into the first overtime. In the first overtime both teams continued to respond shot for shot resulting in the second overtime. It wasn't until the second overtime that the Warriors began to pull ahead first with a 3 point shot posted by
Mike Bonilla. With 2 minutes left in the second overtime the Gyrenes just couldn't answer to the points posted by the Warriors which resulted in the win, 87-80.
The Warriors win over the Gyrenes was a total team effort.
Tyler Hoevenaar led the Warriors on offense with 20 points, 4 rebounds, 8 assists, and 1 steal. Also,
Tyler Auerbacher helped led the Warriors by posting 19 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block, and 1 steal. Also chipping in for the Warriors was
Mike Bonilla with 12 points and
Justin Cockrell with 11 points. On the defensive side Gabiel Rutledge assisted the Warriors with 14 rebounds, 8 of which on defense, and 1 block. The Warriors' record improves to 10-9 overall and 5-5 in The Sun Conference. The Gyrenes record falls to 12-11 overall and 3-7 in The Sun Conference.
The Warriors return to action at home on February 2, at 7:00 p.m. as they host Northwood University.
