Lakeland, Fla. - After a tough preseason, Coach Cockburn's Warriors took a short trip to Lakeland, in order to start their regular conference campaign against Southeastern University. The Warriors managed to beat the Fire back in the spring of this year, although it was a tough test, and this time proved to be no different.
While the game was slow to pick up in the first half, both teams shared an even percentage of possession. There was a slight break in play around the 36th minute, due to a storm in the local area.
The tempo picked up in the second half with Southeastern dominating possession. The Warrior's defense remained strong throughout, especially freshman goalkeeper Brandon Stout, who pulled off some incredible saves. The Warrior's task looked formidable when Andy Scott was sent off following a second bookable offense. Despite Scott's dismissal, the Warrior's managed to hang on for overtime.
Southeastern continued to pressure in the first period of overtime, and finally broke through with six seconds remaining. While the Warriors felt down and out, they leapt back into action through solid perseverance. It was two minutes into double overtime when Estevan Lamas met the cross of Ali Yazar, heading the Warriors level. While both teams fought hard to chase the victory, the match ended 1-1.
Coach Cockburn said, “I knew tonight's game was going to be tough, but we managed to stay disciplined, especially as we're missing some of our key players right now. The conference will only get harder, but I'm confident that everything will fall into place.”
