Babson Park, Fla. – The Webber International men's tennis team defeated Northwood University in West Palm Beach on Saturday, 6-3.
The match was very hotly contested and was a marathon, starting at 12:30 p.m. with the final hand shake at 6:30 p.m.
“Northwood is a very well coached team and Coach Perry Sinnett had his team well prepared to play us, as he always does,” stated Coach
Bill Heath.
Northwood was leading 2-1 at the completing of doubles play. The Seahawks won at #1 and #3 by identical 8-6 scores. The Warriors Duo of Philippe Andermatt and Juuso Tapaneinen won 8-4 at #2 doubles.
In the singles competition, Webber tied the match at 2-all when Tapaneinen scored a 6-4, 6-2 win at #3. Northwood took the lead at 3-2 as WIU's #1 player, Rafael Teixeira, fell 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. At #2 singles, Philippe Andermatt pulled off a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 win to tie the match 3-all.
From that point on it was all Warriors. Freshman Marcell Schmitt from Germany, won at #5 singles, 7-6, 6-2. At #4 singles, Brazlian Thiago Marion clinched the match for Webber with a 4-6, 7-6, 4-0 (Ret.) victory. Closing out the match at #6 singles was freshman Tyler Heath with a 6-0, 4-6, 10-8 win.
The Warriors are now 3-3 overall and 3-1 in The Sun Conference.
“This is a win that we just simply gutted out with a refuse to lose attitude,” stated Coach Heath.
With the win the Warriors clinched a berth in The Sun Conference Tournament in April. Only the top four teams in the conference qualify for the tournament.
