Babson Park, Fla. - The Warriors knew it was their last chance heading into yesterday's game with local rivals Warner. Not only would a victory book their place in the Sun Conference regional playoffs, but it would also add the Crooked Lake Cup to their trophy cabinet. The series was based on aggregate rules, with Warner leading 1-0.
Webber were quick to pick up the tempo, with shots flying in from all angles. Miguel Otero, Andy Scott and
Andy Hernandez all tested Jonathan Romero during the first quarter of the game, but the Warner goalkeeper was on the ball.
Hard work and perseverance finally paid off for the Warriors. Estevan Lamas played a perfect ball into the path of Miguel Otero who struck the ball from twenty-five yards out. Otero's powerful shot flew past Romero and into the right-hand side of the goal. Otero celebrated in style with his teammates as the fans roared in excitement. The home team maintained their consistency into the break, knowing the slightest mistake could prove costly.
Not only were the Warriors fired up for the second half, but the Royals were determined to find a way back. Ten minutes into the second half they did just that. A corner from Carlo Coelho gave Kirk Moodie a free header at the back post, leveling the game with thirty-five minutes to play.
Just ten minutes after Warner equalized they were reduced to ten men. A mistimed tackle from Daniel Marrugo resulted in a red card, as the tempo looked to be swaying back into the hands of the Warriors.
The clock was ticking down on the Warrior's season, which must have entered the mind of Otero in the 74th minute. First half roles were reversed when Otero played a perfect long ball over the Royal's defense and into the path of Lamas. While the tension drifted through everyone in attendance, Lamas kept his composure and calmly lobbed Romero to put his team back in front. The Webber supporters went crazy and knew the victory was within reach.
The Warriors maintained possession during the final quarter of the second half, clinching their place in the regional playoffs and becoming the first ever Crooked Lake Cup winners. Webber celebrated their victory in style after praising the hundreds of Warriors that were in attendance.
Coach Cockburn said, “I can't even begin to describe the feeling. Not only did we clinch our place in the regional tournament, but to qualify through defeating Warner and winning the Crooked Lake Cup is surreal. This is the first trophy I've won during my coaching career, but it belongs to the boys. It's great to see their hard work finally paid off. From the moment I woke up I had a gut instinct it would our day. We were incredible from the defense to the offense and everything in between. We will now enjoy senior day on Saturday, then turn our attention to Northwood on November 6th. Lastly, thank you to everyone who came out to support, this trophy is dedicated to you!”
