MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Webber International University men's soccer team battled No. 10 St. Thomas University on Wednesday night, but ultimately fell 3-2 in Sun Conference action at AutoNation Field.
The Warriors (2-8-1, 0-3 SUN) struck first in the 20th minute when Rodnny Gonzalez found the back of the net off an assist from Vitalis Takawira Jr., giving Webber an early 1-0 advantage.
St. Thomas answered in the 30th minute to send the match into halftime tied at 1-1.
The Bobcats took their first lead shortly after halftime, scoring in the 52nd minute to make it 2-1.
Webber responded just minutes later as Mateo Lozada scored in the 55th minute, with Gonzalez picking up the assist to even the match at 2-2.
With the match appearing destined for a late finish, St. Thomas found the deciding goal in the 86th minute to take a 3-2 lead and hold on for the victory.
Gonzalez led the Warriors offensively with a goal and an assist, while Lozada added a goal. Takawira Jr. recorded an assist, while Alejandro Moreno made seven saves in 85 minutes of action.
St. Thomas finished with a 20-6 advantage in shots, including a 10-5 edge in shots on goal. Both teams finished with five corner kicks and 17 fouls.
The loss extends St. Thomas' winning streak in the all-time series to 16 matches, with the Bobcats now holding a 21-2 advantage in the series.
Webber will return to Sun Conference action on Saturday, October 10, traveling to Lakeland to take on Southeastern University at 11 a.m.
