Mathis Breaks Loose for 128 Yards as Warriors Fall to No. 10 Keiser

BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Webber International University football team battled No. 10 Keiser University on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Turf Field, with the Warriors falling to the Seahawks, 21-7, in Sun Conference action.

Webber (2-6, 0-4 SUN) kept pace with the nationally ranked Seahawks through much of the contest, matching Keiser's opening touchdown with a third-quarter score by D'Markus Mathis. However, Keiser (5-2, 3-1 SUN) answered with a touchdown of its own before adding an insurance score in the fourth quarter.

Mathis led the Warriors' ground attack with 128 rushing yards on 15 carries, averaging 8.5 yards per attempt. He capped a five-play, 38-yard drive with a 27-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter, tying the game at 7-7 with 3:41 remaining in the period.

Quarterback Trent Grotjan added 92 rushing yards on 16 carries, giving Webber two players with more than 90 yards on the ground. The Warriors finished with 247 rushing yards on 40 attempts, averaging 6.2 yards per carry.

Keiser opened the scoring with a 38-yard touchdown pass from Damari Charlton to Xavier Tucker in the first quarter. The Seahawks carried a 7-0 advantage into halftime before Mathis found the end zone to even the score in the third.

Keiser regained the lead on a three-yard touchdown run by Raphael Ekechi as time expired in the third quarter. The Seahawks added their final score on an eight-yard touchdown reception by Dallas Desouza from Charlton with 7:35 remaining in the fourth.

Grotjan contributed 21 passing yards while completing four passes, and Noel Rodriquez Santigo added seven passing yards. Terrell Holt led Webber's receiving corps with three catches for 24 yards, while Kendall Johnson recorded two kickoff returns for 51 yards, including a long of 33 yards.

Defensively, the Warriors held Keiser to 187 rushing yards and 362 total yards of offense. Webber also recorded an interception, returning it 17 yards, while limiting the Seahawks to 4-of-9 on third-down conversions.

Despite outgaining Keiser on the ground, Webber was unable to overcome the Seahawks' passing attack and second-half scoring.
