Lewiston, Idaho – The 5th seeded Webber International Baseball team competed against the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs Tuesday morning in the consolation bracket of the Avista NAIA World Series. After a quick 1-2-3 first inning from Warrior starter Mark Link, the Bulldog bats came at Webber, as the Warriors ultimately fell 17-7.
After a tough early deficit, Webber scored their first run in the fourth inning when Ryan Recio capitalized on an error and came home on a double-play grounder by Skyler Schulz. Recio was active offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, including a double.
The Warriors' bats awakened further in the sixth inning, sparked by Deven Tedders' pinch-hit single, followed by patient plate discipline from Drew Stubbs, who walked. With the bases loaded, pinch hitter Jarrett May delivered a crucial double to left field, clearing the bases and bringing Webber back into contention at 15-4. May ended the day 1-for-3 with three RBIs, highlighting his timely hitting.
In the seventh inning, Tedders, continuing his impactful play, doubled and was driven home by Recio's double. Bryan Morales also contributed significantly, finishing 2-for-5 with an RBI single in the seventh inning, boosting the Warriors' offense.
Webber added another run in the eighth inning through consecutive singles from Tedders and pinch-hitter Joseph Becker, the latter driving in Richard Rodriguez. Tedders had an impressive showing, finishing the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored, providing a consistent offensive spark off the bench.
However, despite late momentum and offensive highlights, including Becker's RBI and a strong performance off the bench, the Warriors' pitching staff faced difficulties containing Tennessee Wesleyan's offense, allowing 17 runs on 18 hits.
On the pitching side, Webber's early struggles were evident, as Link and relievers Jacob Hardy, Noah Palmese, Hunter Youngblood, and Dalton Robinson collectively tried to mitigate Tennessee Wesleyan's aggressive offense.
Ultimately, while the game didn't result in a win, individual standouts for Webber included Tedders, Recio, May, and Morales, each showcasing their offensive capabilities amidst a challenging game.
