The game started with WIU applying immediate pressure. SCAD Savannah's Noah Moreland had the first shot attempt at 13:41, but it sailed wide. Shortly after, WIU capitalized on their first clear attempt, and Nick Sheaffer broke the deadlock at 12:40, scoring the first goal of the game off an assist from Jeremiah Loo.
WIU continued to control possession, winning the next faceoff and moving the ball efficiently. A penalty on Cameron Clark of SCAD Savannah gave WIU a man-up advantage, though they couldn't immediately capitalize.
