Babson Park, FL – The Webber International Football team hosted former Mid-South Foe Campbellsville University on the Warrior Turf Field Saturday afternoon. After a close back-and-forth first half, the Warriors were unable to contain the Tigers, falling 28-10.
The game started off with a touchback from kicker Zachary Van Fleet, to give the Tigers the ball at their own 25-yard line. Campbellsville started their drive with two straight completions before a tackle for loss from Kayden Hill and an incomplete pass had the Tigers with 3rd and 13. The next play, however, was a 37-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring and put Campbellsville up 7-0. Terry Weems Jr took the ball for the first two plays from scrimmage for the Warriors, accumulating two yards on two rushes. He caught an eight-yard pass from Quarterback Trent Grotjan for a first down. The Warrior drive would stall there as 11-yard completion to Weems was not enough on fourth down and the Warriors punted it off the foot of Jaxson Rivera and after hitting a Tiger leg at the 28-yard line, the ball rolled all the way to the three, pinning the Tigers deep in their own territory. A personal foul helped Campbellsville get extra yardage, but back-to-back offensive penalties gave them 1st and 30 from their own 32. Jalen Williams and Devin Colado made tackles and force the Tigers to punt. The Warriors continued to pound the ball on the ground as Weems Jr and Taylor Scarbrough picked up Running Back duties. An eight-yard rush for Weems Jr gave Webber a first down going into the second quarter.
Following completions to Jahseim Lesaine and Weems Jr, Scarbrough took the 2nd and 7 rush attempt 49-yards to the house for a touchdown. Van Fleet drilled the extra point to make it 7-7 in the second quarter. The Tigers started their drive strong, with back-to-back third down conversions, putting the ball around midfield. A false start and a fumble pinned Campbellsville back in their own territory and a completion was promptly snuffed out by Warren Laguerre and Tyron Washington. On 3rd and 28, a 12-yard completion was made, but the Tigers were forced to punt again. Grotjan completed passes of 17 yards to Weems Jr, and 26 yards to Kenneth Davis, putting the Warriors on the Campbellsville 26, with prime position to score again. After losing his helmet on a three-yard rush, Ricky Sampson came in for back-to-back Quarterback rushes, gaining four yards and then no yards leaving it up to the leg of Van Fleet to knock in a 36-yard field goal to give the Warriors the lead 10-7. The Tigers got the ball back with four minutes left in the half and drove down the field. Back-to-back incompletions including a pass breakup from Caden Morrell gave Campbellsville a fourth down. They were able to convert on a 16-yard pass and three plays later found paydirt to take the lead 14-10. Webber had two seven-yard rushes to head to halftime 14-10.
Grotjan and the Warriors came out strong to start the second half, as he completed two passes to Keyon Dickens for a first down. Passes to Avery Giddens and Lesaine put Webber on the Campbellsville side of the field, before a penalty moved them back five yards. Disaster struck on second down as Grotjan threw an interception, which was then returned for a touchdown, making it 21-10. Scarbrough split the defense on the Warriors next play for a 35-yard rush, but a dead ball penalty moved the Warriors back 15 yards. Another rush from Scarbrough had the Warriors at 2nd and 3, but another Grotjan interception would halt the promising drive. With the Tigers starting on the Warriors' side of the field, the defense needed to stand tall. After a 29-yard completion, the Tigers had three different touchdown passes called back due to penalties. A holding penalty on first and goal, and a personal foul on second and goal helped the Warriors stall the Tigers. On fourth down, Campbellsville lined up for a field goal, but a low snap caused the ball to be low enough to the ground for the Warriors to get a hand on it, blocking it and returning it to the Campbellsville 36-yard line. Webber would turn in a turnover on downs on the ensuing drive, with an incomplete pass and three straight rushes getting stuffed, handing the ball back to the Tigers. After another third down conversion, Tyron Washington bull-rushed the Tigers' offensive line, dropping the Quarterback for a six-yard sack. Unfortunately, a facemask by the Warriors gave the Tigers an automatic first down, and two straight seven-yard rushes pushed the game into the final quarter with Campbellsville in Webber territory.
Campbellsville would again have a drive stalled by penalties, as they were moved back to 1st and 35. A pass breakup from Tre' Mobley and a tackle from Williams forced the Tigers to punt again. Scarbrough broke out for another 20-yard rush, but after a second down rush and a third down completion to Lesaine, Scarbrough was stuffed on 4th and 2, giving the ball back to Campbellsville. After an incompletion on 1st down, the Tigers had four straight plus plays resulting in the final touchdown of the day, making it 28-10. The Warriors' next drive would be stalled by a holding penalty, then a dead ball penalty, giving Webber 3rd and 29 at their own six-yard line. A 10-yard rush from Weems gave Rivera some breathing room, as he flipped the field with a 65-yard punt. The Warriors contained the Tigers on their next drive, as Collado and Takari Plummer each made stops on 2nd and 3rd down respectively. Makai Elder had a four-yard return on the punt. Sampson came out as Quarterback for the Warriors final drive but threw an interception on his first pass. Campbellsville had one rush for seven yards before kneeling it twice to end the game.
Grotjan led the Warriors with 107 yards passing, while Scarbrough had 110 yards rushing, and Weems Jr added 50. Weems also led the Warriors with 39 receiving yards, while Lesaine and Davis had 26 each. On defense, Williams and Washington each had seven total tackles, with Washington adding the sack. Morrell led the Warriors with three pass breakups while Laguerre had two.
The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday, September 14th when they travel to Rome, Georgia to take on Shorter University.
