All Three Sides of the Ball Score as Warriors Take Down Oaklanders at Home

Babson Park, FL – The Webber International Football team hosted NCAA Division II foe Lincoln University on the Warrior Turf Field Saturday afternoon. After a slow start, the Warriors exploded for 63 points, taking down the Oaklanders 63-20.

Lincoln started out the game offense after a 57-yard kickoff from Zachary Van Fleet. The Oaklanders were able to get multiple chunk yardage plays, getting back-to-back-to-back first downs on their first drive, getting into the redzone. This is where their drive would stall however as after two straight one-yard rushes, Lincoln's Quarterback threw two incompletions to turn the ball over on downs. The Warriors first drive started promising with a 16-yard rush from Terry Weems Jr but starting Quarterback Trent Grotjan would throw an interception on the next play, giving Lincoln the ball back. Starting in Warrior territory, the Oaklanders were able to march down the field and score. Josiah Everrett picked up a sack along the way, but on 4th and goal, a 10-yard touchdown found the endzone, as Lincoln missed the ensuing two-point conversion, making it 6-0. After a penalty on Taylor Scarbrough's first rush of the game, the Warriors had three straight incompletions, resulting in a punt from Jaxson Rivera, who after having trouble with the snap, was able to evade pressure and boot the ball 43 yards to the two-yard line.

After a first down to get out of their own endzone, the Oaklanders were unable to get anything going and ended up punting. Devantae Stephens came up with a punt block, and the Warriors recovered the ball in the endzone for a touchdown. The extra point was good, and Webber took a 7-6 lead. The Oaklanders responded in kind with another touchdown drive of their own. A 15-yard touchdown put Lincoln back in the lead, 12-7. On fourth down for the Warriors, Rivera's punt went high, bouncing around before the Oaklanders fumbled the ball, forced by Longsnapper Jaxson Rivera, who recovered the ball at the Lincoln 35-yard line. After an five-yard completion to Keyon Dickens with a pitch to Weems Jr, Grotjan found Asavien McWilliams for a 22-yard touchdown to give Webber a 14-12 lead. The Warriors defense held strong, forcing the Oaklanders into another turnover on downs.  An illegal contact penalty gave Webber the ball on the three-yard line with goal to go, and Grotjan found Dickens in the endzone for a touchdown to make it 21-12On Lincoln's next drive, penalties took over, multiple chunk plays were negated by penalties, resulting in a 4th and 25 play, resulting in a turnover on downs. One more play from the Warriors brought the game to halftime with the score 21-12.

Out of the half, Webber wasted no time, as Grotjan completed passes to Weems Jr for 15-yards, and then Dickens for a 44-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 28-12. A 1st and 20 pass from Lincoln was intercepted by Warren Laguerre, setting up another Warrior scoring drive. From the 17-yard line, Scarbrough had rushes of eight and nine yards, to find the endzone for another touchdown, extending the lead 35-12. Lincoln's ensuing drive had a 53-yard touchdown negated by another penalty. Caden Morrell and Kayden Hill then combined for a sack, and the Oaklanders ended the drive with a punt. The Warriors dialed up a trick play with a double pass, as Grotjan went to Keyon Stephens who then launched it to DJ Loriston for a 41-yard touchdown, making it 42-12. Lincoln's next play was more disaster for the Oaklanders, as James Moore intercepted the ball at the 22, and took it in for a score putting the game at 49-12. Lincoln was able to begin a drive down the field from their own 31, but after a 1st and 15 near midfield, three straight incompletions forced another punt. With Blake Bircher under center, Jahseim Lesaine took a pass 42-yards to the Lincoln 38. On 4th and 7, Birchler busted through a broken pocket and picked up 22 yards with his legs, bringing about the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter started with another score as D'Markus Mathis found the endzone on a three-yard rush to bring the score to 56-12. Lincoln was able to find the endzone one more time on their next drive, completing a 38-yard touchdown pass and then getting the two-point conversion, making it 56-20. Birchler had a touchdown pass called back due to a holding call, and an ensuing unsportsmanlike conduct penalty pushed Webber from the two to the 27-yard line. A 15-yard rush from Ricky Sampson put Webber on the 12, and on fourth down Van Fleet lined up for a field goal. The ball was pushed to the right, hitting the goal post and falling back in the endzone to keep the score 56-20. On second down for Lincoln, Kaiden Morris picked off the Oaklanders' Quarterback, returning it 35-yards to the Lincoln 21. The Warriors had the ball inside the 10 and had three straight incompletions. On fourth down with Van Fleet lining up for another field goal, a penalty on the defense gave Webber a fresh set of downs. Mathis found the endzone once again and the Warriors extended the lead 63-20. Lincoln did not quit as they quickly ran down the field with the ball. A facemask penalty on Webber gave them the ball at the one-yard line, where the Warrior defense held strong, stuffing three rushes to not allow the Oaklanders to score, ending the game at 63-20.

Grotjan led the team with 184 passing yards, while Birchler added 94 of his own. Birchler also led the team with 25 rushing yards, while Mathis and Davaughn Thomas each had 18. Dickens broke the 100-yard receiving threshold with 104 yards and two touchdowns, while McWilliams had 66 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, Jalen Williams led the Warriors with eight total tackles, while Devin Collado added seven of his own. Josiah Everett picked up two sacks for a total of 11-yards lost, while James Mesidor had one of his own as well. Webber also recorded six pass breakups on the afternoon.

The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday, September 28th when they open SUN Conference play hosting the Ave Maria Gyrenes on the Warrior Turf Field at 1:30 PM.
