Warriors Take Down Running Eagles to Advance to Conference Finals

Kingspoint, TN – The Webber International University men's volleyball team continued on their tear through postseason play as they battled the Life University Running Eagles on Friday evening. The Warriors, looking to advance to the finals on Saturday afternoon, took care of their business in the semi's and crushed the Running Eagles 3-0 in another three-set sweep.

In the third matchup of the season between the Warriors and Running Eagles, the Warriors had gotten the better of their conference foe in both previous meetings 3-1 in four set victories. This time, set up for a semi-final conference tournament matchup, the Warriors would be challenged by the Running Eagles very early on in set one. The Running Eagles jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, but the Warriors battled back with early kills from Carson Barnes and Thoralf Schmelzer. It would be all tied up at 11-11 when the Warriors started to make their run. Barnes would tally three more kills with an ace from Schmelzer to give the Warriors a 22-18 lead. Gunter Perea would add in his first kill of the day and the Warriors would walk away with a set one victory 25-23.

Set two was a slightly different story for the Warriors as they would be the ones to jump out to an early 4-1 lead behind kills from Kevin McCarthy and Schmelzer. After setting an AAC tournament record for service aces in a match the previous game, the Warriors would only have three throughout their match on Friday evening, but Ayden Keeter would join that service ace party late in set two. The Warriors would only tally seven kills in set two, but behind a multitude of service and attacking errors from the Running Eagles, the Warriors would cruise to a set two victory 25-18 to take a 2-0 lead. The third set would be another case of the Warriors offense taking care of their business. Schmelzer would add six of his eleven kills of the match in the third set, and Keeter finished the day with another 24 assists to add to his great season. The third set remained close through the beginning of the set, but the Warriors would take control and finish off the Running Eagles, 25-19 to complete the three-set sweep.

The Warriors will advance to the final's matchup tomorrow afternoon to compete for the AAC Championship against the #1 seed Reinhardt University Eagles at 1 PM.
