Babson Park, FL – The Webber International softball team hosted St. Ambrose University and added two more wins to their record. The Fighting Bees kept it close with the Warriors in game one, but Webber took game two in a swift six inning 11-3 run rule.
GAME ONE: LATE ROCKET FROM ROMERO BOOSTS THE WARRIORS PAST SAU.
Jenna Chaudoin notched her 7th win of the season, as she pitched her eighth complete game of the season. The senior struck out four batters as she kept the Fighting Bees to just three earned runs.
Thalia Romero led the team, once again, as she went 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs, including a solo homerun to win the game. Gracie Lopez and Brandy Barquin also went 2-for-4 for the Warriors. Haley Saylor went 1-for-1 with a two-run RBI single.
Chaudoin started off strong as she kept the Fighting Bees out of the base path. Lopez got things started with a single to third base. Rachel Lamoureaux followed suit with a single to right center before a hard-hit ball to the shortstop from Romero allowed a run to score for the Warriors. Barquin singled with a dropping bunt to make it 1-0 for Webber and then caught SAU sleeping as she stole second base. A sac fly for Bland brought in another run and gave the Warriors a three-run lead going into the second inning.
Webber's defense remained strong as SAU remained scoreless. A quick bunt for Alycia Celia led off the second inning, as an error put runners on the corners. Romero notched another RBI as the Warriors were up four going into the third.
SAU got two across in the third before Chaudoin pulled the string and forced back-to-back strikeouts. The Fighting Eagles evened the score in the top of the fifth inning. The Warriors responded with a Haley Saylor two-run RBI single to get back in front.
SAU evened the score again in the top of the 6th inning, before a Romero solo shot put the Warriors ahead. Three outs were all Chaudoin needed as Kylie Bright got the grab to secure the 7-6 win.
GAME TWO: LAMOUREAUX WITH A WALK OFF SINGLE TO ENSURE THE 11-3 RUN-RULE WIN.
Chloe Rayner got her second win of the season and added another complete game and two strikeouts to her resume.
Rachel Lamoureaux had an incredible day as she went 5-for-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs, including the game winning single. Haley Saylor added two hits and 3 RBIs to game two, while Romero and Barquin added two hits apiece.
Three straight singles loaded the bases before a chopper from Bland scored one for the Warriors. A walk for Kylie Bright put Webber up by two before SAU got the third out in the first inning.
The Fighting Bees responded with two runs of their own. A Lamoureaux shot down the left field line. SAU added a run in the top of the fifth inning to keep the game tied.
Webber had a seven-run fifth inning to grab a large lead. Barquin led off with a double, followed by a Nicole Gutierrez walk to put two on. A double steal put two in scoring position, as a walk for Alexi Watkins loaded the bases with one out. Jasmine Cummings got her first collegiate at-bat and took a ball to the elbow to notch her first RBI. Saylor tripled through the right side to make it 7-3. An error allowed Lopez on base and Saylor to score extending the lead further. Lamoureaux singled with a bunt and then stole second to put two in scoring position. Romero singled to through the second baseman, bringing in a run and moving Lamoureaux to third. A fielder's choice and lineout saved the run-rule for the Bees.
SAU was unable to get on base in the top of the sixth as catches by Barquin and Saylor put the Warriors back on offense with one run to score. Watkins hit the ball back where it came from for a single. A hit-by-pitch and error loaded the bases with two outs as the consistent bat of Lamoureaux stepped up and brought in the closing run.
Webber will be back home this weekend as they are set to host SUNC foe College of Coastal Georgia in a three-game series. First pitch is set for Friday, March 22nd at 4 PM.
