Babson Park, FL – The Webber International Football team hosted the NAIA #1 Keiser Seahawks for Senior Day on the Warrior Turf Field Saturday afternoon. The Warriors hung around with the Seahawks for most of the game, but were unable to upset Keiser, falling 34-20.
The Warriors won the opening coin toss and deferred to the second half. After a kickoff from Wyatt Fountain, the Warrior defense went to work. Caden Morrell notched his first tackle of the game on a five-yard rush, James Moore and Jalen Williams combined for the tackle on 2nd and 5, before a pass breakup by Kayden Hill made it 4th and 5 for the Seahawks, who went for it and turned the ball over on an incompletion. Terry Weems Jr. and Trent Grotjan each started the game with positive rushes, gaining a first down after Weems ran for a gain of two. After Grotjan found Asaivien McWilliams on first down, back-to-back incompletions forced the Warriors into a punt by Jaxson Rivera, which was downed at the three-yard line. Antonio Johnson, Warren Laguerre, Tre' Mobley, and Morrell all made tackles on the next Keiser drive. Tyler Powell, Matthew Smiciklas, Hill, Ray Lane, and James Moore also made tackles, but the Seahawks were able to find the endzone, missing the extra point to make it 6-0. A 17-yard rush from Weems Jr., and a 23-yard completion to Dickens put Webber in the Seahawks territory, but after three more plays, Van Fleet was sent out to kick a 44-yarder, making it and putting the score at 6-3. Keiser was able to move the ball to midfield, taking the game to the second quarter.
On 4th and 3, Plummer and Washington made a stop on the 40-yard line, turning the ball over and giving the Warriors the ball. Grotjan found Dickens for 43 yards on 2nd and 8, as Dickens was brought down at the Keiser 15. After three rushes, the Warriors had 4th and 3, sending Van Fleet out to tie the game on a 25-yard field goal, making it 6-6. Keiser then took the ensuing kickoff to the house for a touchdown, going up 13-6. D'Markus Mathis had the first rush of the next drive for five yards. Grotjan then rattled off a 41-yard rush to the Keiser 29. An incomplete pass, a rush by Mathis and two sacks ended the Warrior drive with a turnover on downs. On 3rd and 5 for Keiser, James Moore made a solo tackle at the line of scrimmage, forcing the Seahawks into a punt, which turned into a touchback. Mathis and Grotjan each had a rush with an added facemask penalty to bring the ball to the 40. Grotjan found Avery Giddens for a nine-yard completion, but Webber would be forced to punt on 4th and 15. Rivera however would be roughed on the kick, giving Webber a fresh set of downs in Keiser territory. On 4th and 5, Grotjan found Dickens for seven yards and the first. He then found Giddens for three yards but would go incomplete his next two passes. On 4th and 7, Van Fleet missed a 38-yarder wide right as the game headed into halftime.
A punt from Rivera started the Warriors first drive of the second half, but after the returner muffed it, James Mesidor came up with it at the Keiser 27. One play later, Weems Jr. took it to the house, tying the game at 13-13. Kayden Hill, Khristian Hill, Morrell, and Williams held the Seahawks down offensively, forcing another punt from Keiser. After two rushes for seven yards from Weems Jr., Grotjan scrambled for 26 yards on 3rd and 8. A rush from Weems Jr. and a completion had the Warriors with 4th and 5, setting up another Van Fleet field goal attempt. Van Fleet was roughed on the kick, giving Webber 1st and 10 from the 12. Taylor Scarbrough took the next to rushes for seven and five yards respectively into the endzone to give the Warriors a 20-13 lead. Keiser tied the game on their next play from scrimmage, a 57-yard rush. Webber was stalled on their next drive, going three and out, forcing Rivera to punt once again. After tackled from both Hills, Washington and Moore, the Seahawks took the lead for good on a 71-yard touchdown completion, making it 27-20. A negative four-yard rush from Weems Jr. sent the game into the fourth quarter.
Grotjan found Tim Young on back-to-back passes for 35 yards. After a gain of one on a rush and a sack, Grotjan threw an interception, which gained 15 yards on a facemask penalty on the Warriors. The Seahawks were able to find the endzone again on a 38-yard touchdown pass, making it 34-20. Two rushes for 20 yards from Scarbrough was the most the Warriors could get on their next drive, as Rivera punted again. On 2nd and 9 for Keiser, Mobley forced a fumble by the Seahawks running back four yards behind the line of scrimmage, with Morrell picking it up for Webber. The Warriors' final play from scrimmage was an interception thrown by Grotjan at the seven-yard line. Smiciklas, Johnson, Washington, Williams, and Morrell all made tackled on the Seahawks final drive as the buzzer blew and the Warriors fell to the Seahawks 34-20.
Grotjan led the team with 127 passing yards and 85 rushing yards. Weems Jr. had 70 while Scarbrough had 44. Dickens led the team with 73 receiving yards, while Young had 35. Defensively, Morrell once again led the team with 10 tackles, as well as the fumble recovery. Washington had eight tackles while Smiciklas had seven. Mobley led the team with two tackles for loss.
The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday, November 9th when they travel across the Crooked Lake to take on the Warner Royals at Warner at 6:00 P.M.
