Warriors Fall in Season Opener to Lions

Lakeland, FL – The Webber International Women's Basketball team opened up its season at the SEU WBB Classic in Lakeland on Monday night. The Warriors matched up with the Nelson University Lions and fought tough but were unable to overcome an early deficit.

Jaiden Ross scored the first point for the Warriors on a jump shot to tie the game at 2-2. Kori Wimberly and Ross scored the next four points for Webber to keep it close. Ross again scored twice for her eighth point of the game, making it 10-6 in favor of the Warriors. Making her Warrior debut, J Curry made two free throws to help keep Webber ahead of Nelson. A Webber cold streak was broken by a make from Wimberly, before new Warrior Neri Moreau sank a shot as well, making the score 25-16 in favor of the Lions heading into the second quarter.

Wimberly started the second quarter with a make, cutting the deficit to seven points. After another make from Ross, the Warriors would go on a five minute cold streak, which was finally broken by a Khaliya Gaitor free throw in her first game action for Webber. Moreau made a three-pointer soon after, and Gaitor would score again, making it 44-26. Curry made a jumper with 30 seconds left, making it 46-28 going into halftime.

Moreau made another three to start the scoring in the second half for the Warriors, off an assist from Curry. Gaitor made a three as well before Ross hit another jumper to make it 53-36. Renae Brant scored on a make before two free throws from Wimberly ended the third quarter with the score 67-40.

Wimberly got into double figures with a layup to start the fourth quarter. Brant got a fastbreak score off of a steal, to make it 67-44. Ross scored the next basket for the Warriors, upping her point total to 14. Curry was fouled on a shot attempt, going 1-2 from the charity stripe. Gaitor scored the final point for the Warriors from the free throw line, as Webber fell 78-48.

Ross led the team with 14 points, eight rebounds, and one block. Wimberly had 10 points, six rebounds, and an assist. Moreau was the third leading scorer, with eight points, three rebounds and two assists.

The Warriors will be back in action on Tuesday, October 29th when they take on Brewton-Parker on day two of the SEU WBB Classic.
