Warriors Sink Mariners Thanks to Second Half Surge

Babson Park, FL – The Webber International Women's Basketball team welcomed the Coastal Georgia Mariners to the Sabbagh Center Wednesday evening. The Warriors played complete team basketball, as they outscored the Mariners by 20 points, thanks in part to four Warriors scoring in double figures, 85-65.

Kori Wimberly got the Warriors on the board, as her layup was assisted by Samantha Pacheco. Pacheco and Wimberly, both assists from Jaida Burgess. Burgess would soon after make a bucket to put the Warriors ahead 8-6. Alisha Walker scored the next five points for Webber on two layups and a free throw. Pacheco went on a six-point run of her own, hitting two tough jumpers and two free throws. Burgess hit one more shot as time was expiring in the first quarter to bring the score to 24-21 in favor of the Mariners.

Burgess made two quick free throws at the start of the second quarter. Walker made another layup before Wimberly hit a free throw to tie the game at 26. Jermaisa Klopsis got herself on the board before Burgess made four straight free throws to give Webber a slim 32-31 lead. Klopsis made another basket before Burgess and Pacheco each sunk two from the charity stripe. Klopsis again made a bucket, extending Webber's lead to four, 40-36. Pacheco would find paydirt once more in the half, of an assist from Wimberly to put the score at 42-36 in favor of the Warriors.

The first bucket for the Warriors in the third quarter was from who else but Burgess. Janaina Goncalves and Jaiden Ross both found the scoreboard for the first time in the second half. Burgess was sent to the line for an and-one opportunity, sinking the free throw and giving Webber a 51-41 lead. Ross, Wimberly, and Burgess made five straight free throws before Wimberly hit a three and a layup to put Webber up 61-45. Goncalves and Pacheco would both make one more shot to head into the fourth quarter with the Warriors leading 65-50.

It was more of the same in the fourth for the Warriors with Pacheco scoring first. Goncalves was fouled on a make, making the and one opportunity. Pacheco scored the next six by herself, making a jumper and four straight free throws. Not to be outdone by her teammate, Burgess would score the next five for Webber, bringing the score to 81-63 in favor of the Warriors. Walker ended the scoring for the night by making two straight layups to cap off a 20-point victory for the Warrior, 85-65.

Burgess again led the Warriors in scoring, dropping 24 points, along with five rebounds and four assists. Pacheco was close behind her backcourt duo, dropping a double-double, with 22 points and 10 rebounds. She added four assists and five steals. Wimberly had 12 points and five rebounds. Walker was the final Warrior in double digits, also securing a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday, January 13th when they head to the Furnace to take on the Fire of Southeastern.
