Warriors Take Two at TMU Invite

Cleveland, Ga. – The Webber International Women's Volleyball team competed twice on the second day of the Truett McConnell Invite on Saturday afternoon, winning both matches they played. Webber swept Brenau University 3-0, before coming back from down 2 sets to 1, winning the match 3-2.

Webber started out set 1 strong, jumping out to a 6-3 lead following kills from Nadia Reid, Cintia Lorena, and a service ace from Paysee Crow. Kills from Jaizah Anderson and Delanie Johnson in addition to another from Reid, kept the Warriors ahead 9-6. Rylee Bolser got in on the action helping the Warriors extend their lead 12-7. Brenau scored four straight points after that, bringing the score to 12-11. Webber and Brenau would go back and forth soon after, with neither team able to string more than two points before the other scored. Webber was able to get to take a 19-17 lead before Brenau took a timeout. Webber scored two more points after that, forcing Brenau to take another timeout with the score at 21-18. Webber scored four of the next nine points, taking set 1 25-23.

Set 2 started out similarly for Webber, as they amassed a 6-4 lead following five errors from the Golden Tigers and a kill from Lorena. A kill from Savanna Wilhite and two more Brenau errors gave the Warriors a 9-5 lead, forcing the Golden Tigers to take a timeout. Webber scored nine of the next 12 points, with service aces from Wilhite and Kiersten Tisdale, as well as multiple kills from Johnson. Brenau started to score, but the closest they would get to the Warriors in set 2 would be four points with the score sitting at 20-16. Webber then scored five of the next eight points to take set 2 25-19, capped off with another kill from Wilhite.

Webber again got out to an early lead in set 3, recording an 8-3 lead following kills from Lorena, Vivianne Cancio, Johnson, Crow, and Anderson. Kills from Wilhite, Ana Clara Araujo, and Anderson followed by a Brenau attacking error forced the Golden Tigers into a timeout with the score sitting at 12-5. Webber and Brenau split the next 18 points, with each team scoring nine. Crow added two service aces for the Warriors, with Lorena, Anderson, and Bolser adding kills as well. Brenau took another timeout with the score at 21-14. Webber scored four of the next seven points, with the Warriors capitalizing on three Golden Tigers errors to take set 3 25-17 and win the match 3-0.

Webber and Truett McConnell played a thrilling 5-set match, with the Warriors ultimately coming up victorious. Set 1 started out tight, as Webber clung to a 6-5 lead, following kills from Lorena, Wilhite, and Anderson. Truett McConnell took the lead after scoring four straight points and led the Warriors 9-6. A kill from Wilhite and an attacking error from the Bears brought Webber within one before the Bears scored two points to extend the lead to three, 11-8. Webber and TMU went back and forth for the next seven points, before the Bears scored three in a row, forcing Head Coach Justin Dee to take a timeout, with the score sitting at 17-12. TMU scored eight of the next 13 points, taking set 1 with a score of 25-17.

Webber and TMU sat deadlocked at 6-6 early in set 2, following kills from Reid, Tisdale, Anderson, and Wilhite. The Bears scored five of the next seven points before the Warriors rattled off six straight to take a three-point lead 14-11. Webber scored 11 of the next 16 points, highlighted by a kill from Bailey Berger, and a service ace from Wilhite, and the Warriors took set 2 25-16.

Webber exploded out of the gate in set 3, jumping out to a 10-1 lead, forcing TMU to take their first timeout. TMU responded, however, scoring nine of the next 12 points forcing Webber to take a timeout with the Warriors holding on to a three-point lead at 13-10. A service error from the Bears and a kill from Reid put the Warrior lead up to four, at 15-11. TMU rattled off seven straight points to take the lead 18-15 and force Coach Dee to take another timeout. Webber was outscored seven to five over the next 12 points, with efforts from Johnson, Bolser, Reid, Anderson, and Lorena. It would not be enough however and TMU won set 3 25-20.

This would be the closest the Bears got for the rest of the set. Webber capitalized on a host of TMU mistakes and also got kills from Reid, Anderson, and Wilhite to outscore the Bears 13-7 and win set 4 25-15. Webber evened the score at 2-2 to force a decisive set 5.

Through the first 10 points of set 5, the Warriors and the Bears sat tied at 5-5. Reid, Lorena, and Anderson led the way for the Warriors to keep the game tied. Tied at 7, The Warriors rattled of two more points to take a 9-7 lead, one which they would not relinquish. A kill from Johnson, blocks from the duos of Bolser and Reid and Bolser and Lorena and a kill from Reid led the Warriors to score six of the next eight points and the Warriors won set 5 15-9 and won the match 3-2.

Jaizah Anderson showed out and absolutely demolished every ball set her way. Savanna Wilhite was amazing all weekend and unstoppable out of the middle and on the service line.
